On Prime Day, a coalition of labor, worker advocacy, and community organizations sent a letter to the New York State Department of Labor (NYDOL) demanding an investigation into Amazon’s violations of warehouse worker safety laws at the company’s JFK8 fulfillment center in Staten Island.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Amazon Labor Union-IBT Local 1, ALIGN NY, and The Action Lab are among several organizations that have joined to make a formal request to the Department of Labor’s Safety, Health, and Essential Rights Division for an investigation into Amazon’s violations of the Warehouse Worker Protection Act, Warehouse Worker Injury Reduction Program, and workplace safety committee requirements under New York Labor Law.

The coalition is calling on the Department of Labor to promptly investigate Amazon’s compliance with New York warehouse worker protections and take appropriate enforcement action where violations are found.

Workers’ experiences must be at the center of policies designed to protect them.

During Climate Week NYC, airport, warehouse, cafeteria, delivery and construction workers joined NYC Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su for a roundtable on protecting workers from extreme heat in New York City.

Workers shared powerful firsthand accounts of how dangerous temperatures affect their bodies, their families and their ability to do their jobs safely. They also discussed the protections currently available, the gaps that remain and the changes needed to protect all workers.

Thank you to the workers from 32BJ SEIU, the Amazon Labor Union, Local 372, Teamsters Local 804 and SMART Local 28 who made this conversation real and urgent.

The event was organized by the TEMP Coalition, chaired by NYCOSH, in partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Economic Justice, 32BJ SEIU, the BlueGreen Alliance and National COSH.

No worker should have to risk their health or life to earn a paycheck.

🚨TAKE ACTION!🚨

ALU-IBT Local 1 has formally called on Amazon to protect TPS workers. Now we’re asking our community to turn up the pressure on Amazon.

Several people at Amazon have the power and influence to act, including Executive Chair Jeff Bezos, CEO Andy Jassy, the Board of Directors, and several local key decision-makers such as NY Head of Community Engagement Angela Pinsky and Head of NY Policy Jessica Schumer.

Take one minute to send an email to these key Amazon executives to demand they protect TPS workers by going to tinyurl.com/protect-tps-workers! (Link in bio.)

When workers and community members stand together, we can hold even the world’s largest corporations accountable.

We can’t believe they climbed the Empire State Building just to remind everyone that Amazon runs on workers, and workers deserve a union. ✊🔥

Manny and Jimmy are warehouse workers at JFK8 Amazon Fulfillment Center in Staten Island, NY and workers with visual impairments. Last week, during Prime Day, they led a March on the Boss to notify management of workers’ intent to form a Workplace Safety Committee under the NY HERO Act.

Both work in Pack Singles and navigate the warehouse using the “green mile,” a narrow walking path marked by raised green tape that is supposed to help blind and visually impaired workers move safely through the building. Yet both have been injured on the job after stepping off the path, crashing into equipment left in the path, or colliding with workstations in a workplace that too often fails to account for workers with disabilities.

Today, they shared their stories directly with Senior Management and HR. The response? “Awesome, thanks.” 😤😡🙄 Workers deserve more than empty acknowledgements. They deserve real accommodations, real safety protections, and a real voice in their working conditions.

Manny and Jimmy are leaders. They are speaking up not only for themselves, but for countless workers whose concerns are ignored, minimized, or pushed aside every day. We’re proud to stand with them as they fight for safer workplaces for all workers. 💪✊🔥

🚨 AMAZON WORKERS ARE EXERCISING THEIR RIGHTS 🚨

During Prime Day, JFK8 workers in Staten Island, NY marched on Senior Management and HR to formally notify Amazon of their decision to establish a Workplace Safety Committee pursuant to the New York HERO Act. This law gives workers the right to form joint labor-management workplace safety committees to identify hazards, raise concerns, review safety policies, and help prevent injuries before they happen.

During the action, workers also raised concerns about Amazon’s compliance with New York’s Warehouse Worker Injury Reduction Program, a law which went into effect in June 2025. Workers formally requested documents that Amazon is required to provide under the law, including:

📋 Worksite evaluations for jobs and operations at JFK8
📋 Documentation showing how worker recommendations were incorporated into those evaluations
📋 Records of steps taken to eliminate or reduce identified injury risks
📋 Medical evaluations of Amazon’s on-site first aid program and treatment protocols
📋 Documentation demonstrating consultation with workers and their representatives during the development and implementation of the injury reduction program

Amazon has a long history of acting as though it is above the law, whether it comes to federal labor law or state workplace safety protections. But workers are continuing to organize, exercise their legal rights, and hold the company accountable!
