The Japan Society Business & Policy Forum hosts public and invitation-only programs about the people and issues that define U.S.-Japan relations in a regional and global context. Convening key players and emerging leaders in both countries to address cutting-edge issues, the Japan Society Business & Policy Forum is an opportunity for the exchange of ideas inspired by the Japanese concept of kizuna (絆), or togetherness. On June 16th, we welcomed guests for a book talk, “Japan, Beyond the Genkan: A Conversation with Joshua W. Walker on Japan’s Global Role.”

As Dr. Joshua W. Walker prepares to conclude his tenure as President & CEO of Japan Society, he reflected on the themes of his recent book, “Japan, Beyond the Genkan,” exploring Japan’s values, culture, and growing influence on the global stage. Drawing from his unique experience growing up in Japan and building his career in the US, Dr. Walker shared insights on the evolving US-Japan relationship and Japan’s role in an increasingly interconnected world.

The evening began with opening remarks from Tetsuo Kawate (President & CEO, Mitsubishi Corporation - Americas), followed by a lecture, audience Q&A, and a networking reception.

What does the future of education and work look like in the age of AI? 🤖🌏

Last Friday, we explored exactly that at our Leadership Dialogue co-hosted with Daikin and right here in New York City.

Leaders from academia, business, and policy came together for an inspiring morning of big ideas — from reimagining global universities to rethinking how companies build talent pipelines for an AI-powered world.

The energy in the room was electric, the conversations were honest, and the connections made were genuinely exciting. ✨

A powerful conversation. A defining partnership.

Last week, Japan Society hosted an intimate CEO Roundtable bringing together the top leaders of Nippon Steel and for an honest, forward-looking dialogue on the U.S.-Japan industrial alliance shaping our world today.

We are deeply grateful to Takahiro Mori and David B. Burritt for their thoughtful perspectives, and to our moderator Ariel J. Deckelbaum for guiding such a meaningful exchange.

This week, Japan Society celebrated the graduation of the 2026 Group Mentoring Program, part of the U.S.-Japan Emerging Leaders Initiative.

Over the past six months, 15 mentees worked closely with accomplished mentors, gaining valuable professional insights, expanding their networks, and building meaningful connections across the U.S.-Japan community.

The graduation ceremony featured remarks from mentors and mentees, certificate presentations, group photos, and a reception to celebrate the completion of the program.

A special thank you to our incredible mentors, Stephanie Bowker, Miyoko Demay, Frances Green, and Erika Kingetsu. A huge shout out to our sponsors, participating companies, and honorary mentors Keishi Hotsuki and Lucy Cutting Butler for their continued support and dedication to developing the next generation of U.S.-Japan leaders.

What a remarkable evening! 🌟

We had the privilege of hosting an exclusive roundtable with Mr. Keishi Hotsuki, Vice Chairman of Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group and our esteemed Honorary Mentor, for our U.S.-Japan Mentoring Program.

Mr. Hotsuki generously shared his top 10 career development insights—wisdom drawn from decades of cross-cultural leadership. Our emerging leaders heard firsthand what it takes to navigate careers with authenticity and purpose across the U.S.-Japan landscape.

With mentors Stephanie Bowker, Miyoko Demay, Frances M. Green, and Erika Kingetsu present, the evening illustrated the true power of mentorship: connecting experienced leaders with ambitious peers committed to professional growth and cross-cultural leadership.

On May 12th, Japan Society launched the inaugural event of the Japan Society Innovation Series in partnership with Remarkable Ventures, bringing together leaders from across the U.S.-Japan innovation ecosystem for an evening of discussion, collaboration, and networking.

The program centered on strengthening connections between Japanese corporate venture capital firms and emerging U.S. startups, creating opportunities for entrepreneurs, investors, and corporate leaders to engage directly and exchange ideas.

Guests joined us for a thoughtful conversation featuring: Douglas L. Peterson, Murat Aktihanoglu, Eiko Ooka, Hernan Figueroa, Christian Sassman, Tyler Schinto, Ryo Tateishi, Kenji Togasaki, Kazutoshi Ukon, and Jeff Chen. The event was followed by a startup pitch session connecting U.S. startups with Japanese corporate venture leaders.
