I was officially one of the applicants for the City of Beverly Hills Arts & Culture Commission, and I was preparing for the upcoming interview stage. Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend — not because I feared the outcome, but because I cannot continue sitting down & developing other nations’ while my own country is facing a national mental health and wellness crisis.
Being part of the Beverly Hills Arts & Culture community has been one of my greatest honors. For years, I have contributed to the city’s cultural diplomacy efforts, and as the only Sierra Leonean who has ever stepped forward for this Commission seat, my vision was to build a bridge between African, Chinese, and American art right in Beverly Hills.
Based on the recruitment process and my engagement in the city, my chances of securing this seat were very strong. However, serving on the Commission would require me to remain in Beverly Hills for an extended period, and urgent issues at home demanded my presence. So I chose to leave
Even if I wasn’t selected, I always planned to continue working with the department, because I truly love the impact we created together — especially during the Beverly Hills–Sierra Leone Friendship Gala, an event I organized to launch cultural ties and advocate for a future Sister City relationship between Beverly Hills and Sierra Leone. I encourage Sierra Leoneans in the state to take advantage of this opportunities so that what we’ve created wont go in vain.
My heart remains connected to the city that embraced me, and I will continue strengthening these global cultural bridges as I serve my country during this critical moment.
