NYC Men in Nursing

NYC Men in Nursing We are the New York City Chapter of the American Association for Men in Nursing, the social and professional, home for the men in nursing of NYC.

This will be our official Facebook group page. The page is intended to be a means of communication among members, and a way to engage the general public. As we grow, it will be important to remember that the contents of this page will go down in the history of the group, so to speak. Also, although this will be a great way to spread information, official chapter decisions will be made at chapter m

eetings. Discussions here on the page will not necessarily determine official policy. Please look forward to updates regarding meetings, social events, and outreach. New members will be invited to this group page as they join the chapter. The Association expects this to be the start of something special, and I encourage all of you to make it your own. After all, it is ours to grow and share as we see fit. Here's to the good (healthy) life. To become a member, please click the link below:

Nursing without cynicism means advocating for excellence and challenging broken systems without surrendering to contempt. Realism acknowledges difficulty; cynicism assumes futility. Nursing has always been sustained not merely by skill, but also by spirit. Guarding that spirit against cynicism isn’t sentimental; it’s our affirmation that we haven’t abandoned hope. A large cohort study of nearly 49,000 nurses found that those with the highest levels of gratitude had a 9% lower risk of dying from any cause, especially from heart disease, compared with their less grateful peers. Gratitude, it seems, is not just uplifting; it may also be lifesaving. Gratitude sharpens our awareness of why the work matters. It is a kind of internal scaffolding, helping us stay upright, purposeful, and humane. Read the article by Fidelindo Lim, RN -

Professional attire is more than a matter of fashion; it is a social code that communicates seriousness of purpose and respect for the roles we occupy. Nursing faculty and administrators, in particular, should resist the cultural drift toward dressing down. Social etiquette has long held that different tasks require different attire: the tracksuit belongs in the gym, not the office. The erosion of professional dress sends a subtle but powerful message that professionalism is negotiable. It is not. Read the article by Fidel Lim, RN -

Patients do not care how many committees a nurse served on, or how many times the word “leadership” appears in a résumé. What matters is whether that nurse shows up with compassion, honesty, and the courage to do the right thing, every time. One cannot bullet-point kindness or fake your way into integrity. Yet I see many students and faculty caught in the trap of thinking otherwise, of believing that if they just sprinkle enough power words into their résumés, they will prove themselves worthy. Résumé virtues may get nursing students hired. Eulogy virtues will determine how they’re remembered. And students must be reminded, again and again, that a résumé will only open the door. Eulogy virtues are what fill the rooms with light.

I’ve long believed that nurses who eat together, nurse better together. A hungry team can’t really do good work. This is why we feed each other, literally and symbolically, so we can better care for others. By bringing bananas to class, I’m offering my students a tiny preview of the way nurses look after each other. And maybe, one day, when my students are nurses pulling a four-in-a-row shift, they’ll remember the Thursday morning bananas, and offer something of their own. Read the essay by Fidel Lim, RN -

The reality of bedside nursing is that any anticipated free time will be snatched up even before the nurse can get hold of it. Something always needs to be done. It’s tempting to think that improving care means creating time. But time is only meaningful if it’s used well. If AI saves us time, we must guard that time from being swallowed by distractions, especially the ones that live in our own pockets. I say this not from sanctimony but from genuine aspiration. Perhaps, instead of hourly rounding, we can hourly put down our phones for several minutes. Look up. Visit our patients and truly listen. Read the essay by Fidel Lim, RN -

Affluent countries such as Sweden reported lower levels of life meaning, weaker social ties, and fewer positive emotions compared to their less wealthy counterparts, such as the Philippines. The countries that scored highest in overall flourishing weren’t the richest, but those with enriched human connection—places with close friendships, enduring marriages, and active community life. By re-centering human flourishing as an ethical imperative, the Code of Ethics for Nurses becomes more than a professional standard.

For decades, stakeholders in nursing practice have expressed concerns about the readiness of new graduate nurses to meet the demands of bedside care. Rather than dwelling on this challenge, a constructive approach begins with recognizing the unrealistic expectation of a fully practice-ready new graduate nurse. Read the article by Fidel Lim, RN -

May and June mark the season of both graduations and weddings—milestones that celebrate commitment, transformation, and new beginnings. There’s something vaguely matrimonial about a nursing graduation, and in this reflection, I explore the parallels between these two rites of passage. Read the article by Fidel Lim, RN -

Novice nurses, in particular, frequently are criticized for their slower pace and perceived lack of time management skills. Ironically, the same deliberate focus exhibited by new nurses—frequently dismissed by more experienced colleagues—is precisely what’s required for high-stakes tasks such as the time out procedure or medication administration. If multitasking is both inefficient and unsafe for patient care, why is it regarded as a key indicator of clinical performance success?
