For generations, immigrant communities have built institutions to help New Yorkers find stability and opportunity. A new blog post from Village Preservation explores this history of mutual aid and the organizations created to help newcomers build lives in New York City.

We’re proud to see the Hebrew Free Loan Society included in that history. The VP post highlights HFLS’s founding in 1892 by ten members of New York’s Jewish immigrant community, who pooled just $95 to provide interest-free loans to those in need in their LES community. More than 130 years later, that belief in using interest-free lending to build economic stability continues to guide our work.
