CUNY CLEAR

CUNY CLEAR The CLEAR Project at CUNY School of Law aims to meet the needs of NYC-area communities affected by law enforcement's deployment of counterterrorism policy.

CLEAR primarily aims to address the legal needs of Muslim, Arab, South Asian, and other communities in the New York City area that are particularly affected by national security and counterterrorism policies and practices deployed by various law enforcement agencies. CLEAR represents and advises community members as they respond to requests for voluntary FBI interviews, experience difficulties tra

veling, and otherwise face discriminatory scrutiny by law enforcement. CLEAR facilitates Know-Your-Rights (KYR) workshops at mosques, Muslim student associations, study groups, and other community center on those same issues. Workshops are free and tailored to the needs of the host. If you would like to request a workshop or seek legal advice concerning these issues, please contact us at:

Welcome home, Leqaa! 🎉

Today we had the honor of joining Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh and City Council in welcoming home our client, Leqaa Kordia.

After 367 days in ICE detention. Leqaa is finally reunited with her family and community. Leqaa was joined today by two other CLEAR clients, Mahmoud Khalil and Mohsen Mahdawi. ✊🏽

“CLEAR is a team of expert lawyers and passionate law students who stand in between the vulnerable of our community and a machinery of injustice. And they take the cases no one else wants to touch.”

”Eid Mubarak! We are holding a deep gratitude to YOU, our community, this Ramadan. 🌙

This month has been nothing short of remarkable, with it ending on the sweetest note. After one year of being confined in ICE detention, our client, Leqaa Kordia, is finally free and will spend Eid with her family.🙏🏼

While we celebrate Leqaa’s freedom, other clients are still fighting for theirs. Their cases can be complex and urgent, and often without media attention, but they are just as significant.

This Ramadan showed us what’s possible when we come together. Let this Eid serve as our reminder to stand firmly beside those facing injustice. ✊🏽

We hope you will consider making a donation to support the work we will continue to do. Link in bio.đź”—

May your Eid be filled with love, light, and relief.

Today, after over one-year of confinement byDHS, Leqaa Kordia walks free from ICE detention. This came after a judge ordered her release, for the third time.

Leqaa will head back home to NJ, where she will be surrounded by her loved ones again, to wait out the remainder of her case.

Along with CLEAR, Leqaa is represented by Muslim Advocates, Texas Civil Rights Project, and Boston University School of Law Immigrants’ Rights Clinic.

In response to overwhelming evidence, an immigration judge ordered the release of our client Leqaa Kordia, a 33-year-old Palestinian Muslim woman, on $100,000 bond a third time stating she was “next to no flight risk”despite DHS baselessly arguing no amount of bond was appropriate
Since March 14, 2025, ICE has been confining Ms. Kordia unlawfully in Prairieland Detention Facility in Texas for speaking out about the ongoing genocide in Gaza that has killed nearly 200 of her family members. Ms. Kordia has been separated from her family and community in New Jersey more than 1,500 miles away.
“The government’s insistence on keeping Leqaa locked up is unjust, baseless, and retaliatory. Legaa has endured an entire year of missed moments with her family and friends, and even suffered a seizure and inhumane hospitalization in ICE custody. Enough is enough, Leqaa should be free,” said Sarah Sherman-Stokes, supervising attorney with the Boston University School of Law Immigrants Rights Clinic.

Earlier this week, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in U.S. v. Hemani, involving CLEAR client, Ali Hemani.

On Monday, the Justices weighed whether a specific law, 18 USC 922(g) (3) could be applied to Mr. Hemani, or whether doing so would violate the Constitution. The law punishes anyone who is an “unlawful user” of a controlled substance who also owns a firearm. Mr. Hemani admitted to using ma*****na every other day.

CLEAR took on Mr. Hemani’s case after it became evident that the government had targeted him and his family in part because of their religious practices and identity. The family was the subject of repeated searches and harassment by the federal government.
The Court is likely to issue a decision by June 2026.

Today, Mayor Zohran Mamdani called on President Trump to release Leqaa Kordia — and the calls for her freedom are growing louder.

For nearly one year, Leqaa has been unlawfully detained by ICE in retaliation for her speech in support of Palestinian rights. Recently, she suffered a seizure in detention, a direct consequence of the inhumane conditions she has been forced to endure.

Yesterday, we filed a supplemental brief on behalf of Leqaa Kordia demanding her immediate release on the bond that an immigration judge has now set twice.

Our filing makes clear: the government has failed to justify her continued detention within constitutional limits. Each additional day she remains confined deepens that violation.

Earlier this month, Leqaa was hospitalized for more than 72 hours after suffering a seizure. During that time, her family and legal team were denied access to her and received no updates about her condition, despite repeated requests.

The longer she is detained, the greater the harm to her liberty and her health. Her medical needs only heighten the urgency.

Leqaa is spending her second Ramadan in detention. She should be home.

Did you know you can automate your donations to maximize your reward this Ramadan?

We’re now on MyTenNights, which means you can set up your gift to CLEAR once and have it distributed across the full month or the last 10 nights — including the ones we might miss.

Ramadan is a time of mercy and multiplied reward. Automating your giving is one small way to stay consistent and intentional, while supporting legal advocacy, know-your-rights workshops, and communities dealing with ICE.

Give once. Show up every night. 🌙

After several days of family and counsel searching for her whereabouts, Leqaa Kordia was discharged from hospitalization and returned to immigration confinement at Prairieland Detention Facility in North Texas, where she has been held for nearly a year in retaliation for speaking out for Palestinian rights.

Today, Leqaa details her experiences while receiving medical treatment, which were plagued by the involvement of immigration officers, and speaks out in defense of all women in detention.
