Back-to-school season is here!

As students head back to the classroom, it’s important to think about the assumptions we make about what they can do. Hear from SLP Christopher Bugaj as he shares how a more inclusive approach can empower students with disabilities, rather than limit them.

Recent research funded by the Cerebral Palsy Foundation highlights the potential of telehealth to improve early pathways to cerebral palsy diagnosis — particularly for families in rural and underserved communities.

Published in Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology, the study examined the use of the Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination (HINE) through telehealth. Findings suggest these assessments can help clinicians reliably identify cerebral palsy earlier, even when families face barriers to accessing in-person specialty care.

By expanding access to timely evaluations, referrals, and early intervention, telehealth could play an important role in reducing delays in diagnosis and helping more children get the right care at the right time.

“As someone who was born with a disability, I had to accept the way people look at me differently and whether or not they’ll be kind enough to understand what I’m going through. I can look back at how far I’ve come and how I’ve surprised others with how much I’ve accomplished. Even as my medical condition continues to develop, I strive each day to be nothing but exceptional.”

Thank you, Charlene, for being vulnerable and sharing your story with our community. 💚

Charlene hopes to see a future where people with CP experience less pain and progress towards a cure for cerebral palsy. Learn more about our Cerebral Palsy Cures Initiative and support our work at cerebralpalsyfoundation.org.
