HYPOCRISY! Overnight, russia struck the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, setting fire to part of the Dormition Cathedral, one of the holiest sites in the Christian world and part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The hypocrisy is impossible to ignore.

russia claims to defend “Christian civilization” while setting fire to one of Eastern Christianity’s holiest places.

russia claims to protect faith while bombing churches, killing civilians, abducting Ukrainian children, and trying to erase the history and identity of a Christian nation.

russia claims spiritual authority while attacking the very sacred places from which the Christian tradition of Kyivan Rus’ spread.

The Dormition Cathedral has already survived empire, war, and Soviet destruction. Retreating Soviet forces blew it up in 1941. Independent Ukraine rebuilt it in 2000. Now, once again, Moscow’s violence has come for Ukraine’s sacred and cultural inheritance.

As Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy and Culture Tetiana Berezhna said, an attack on the Lavra is not only about Ukraine. It is an attack on heritage that belongs to all humanity.

UCCA condemns this latest russian attack on Ukraine’s people, faith, culture, and history.

This is the true face of russia’s war: not “traditional values,” not Christianity, not peace, but terror, destruction, and contempt for human life and sacred heritage.

The world must stop treating russia’s religious language as anything other than propaganda. A state that burns churches while calling itself Christian is not defending faith. It is weaponizing it.

russia must be held accountable.

Ukraine’s people must be protected.

Ukraine’s heritage must be defended.

Слава Україні.

UCCA extends our sincere thanks to Senator Richard Blumenthal for joining our virtual town hall on June 9th and for his continued leadership in support of Ukraine.

Senator Blumenthal’s commitment to Ukraine did not begin with the full-scale invasion. As far back as 2014, following russia’s invasion of Ukraine and illegal annexation of Crimea, he was already calling for stronger measures to raise the cost of russian aggression.

Since russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, Senator Blumenthal has continued to stand with Ukraine through action, including repeated visits to Ukraine, most recently his tenth trip since the start of the full-scale war.

At a time when russia continues to target Ukrainian civilians, cities, and critical infrastructure, Senator Blumenthal has continued to press for the support Ukraine needs to defend its people, including air defense, stronger sanctions on russia, and sustained American leadership.

We are especially grateful for his willingness to travel to Ukraine, meet directly with Ukrainian leaders, service members, rescue workers, veterans, and civilians, and bring their stories back to Washington.

During his recent visit, Senator Blumenthal and Rep. Jim Himes wrote that “russia is losing, not winning,” and emphasized a message heard clearly from Ukraine: “Give Ukraine the means, and Ukraine will finish the job.”

UCCA thanks Senator Blumenthal for his time, his partnership with the Ukrainian American community, and his unwavering support for Ukraine’s freedom, sovereignty, and victory.

Слава Україні.

Today, June 8, marks 100 years since the birth of Iryna Senyk — Ukrainian poet, nurse, embroiderer, dissident, Soviet political prisoner, and member of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group.

Born in Lviv in 1926, Senyk dedicated her life to Ukraine through art, service, memory, and resistance. For her commitment to Ukrainian freedom, she was arrested by Soviet authorities and spent decades in prisons, camps, and exile.

But the Soviet regime could not silence her.

Even in captivity, Senyk continued to write poetry and create embroidery designs, preserving Ukrainian identity through words, thread, and memory. Later, as a member of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group, she continued the struggle for human rights and national dignity under Soviet rule.

Her life reminds us that Ukrainian resistance has always taken many forms: poetry, faith, art, human rights advocacy, political courage, and the refusal to forget home.

On the centennial of her birth, UCCA honors Iryna Senyk’s life, legacy, and unbreakable Ukrainian spirit.

Вічна пам’ять. Ukraine remembers.

The U.S. House has passed the Ukraine Support Act — one of the most important pieces of Ukraine legislation in years.

By a vote of 226–195, the House advanced H.R. 2913, a bill that strengthens support for Ukraine and increases pressure on russia through security and reconstruction assistance, loans, expanded sanctions and export controls, and accountability measures for russian war crimes.

This vote sends a clear message: Americans continue to stand with Ukraine.

UCCA thanks every member of Congress who voted for H.R. 2913 and stood up for Ukraine’s freedom, security, sovereignty, and right to defend its people.

We also thank the members who spoke during the debate in support of Ukraine and the urgent need to confront russian aggression, including:
Gregory Meeks , Congressman Steny Hoyer , U.S. Representative Bill Keatingg , Representative Marcy Kaptur , Congressman Don Bacon , Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick , Congressman Kevin Kiley , Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi , Representative Jim Himes , Mike Quigley , Rep. Lloyd Doggett , Congressman Steve Cohen.

The work is not over. The Ukraine Support Act must still move through the Senate and be signed by the President.

Ukraine needs sustained support. russia must be held accountable.

Слава Україні.

A child should know the sound of bedtime stories.
Not air raid sirens.
A child should learn the way to school.
Not the way to a shelter.
A child should fall asleep holding a toy.
Not wondering if their home will still be there in the morning.
On the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression, we remember Ukraine’s children — the ones stolen by russia’s war, and the ones still growing up beneath it.
Childhood should never be a battlefield.

A strong message of support for Ukraine in Congress

On June 3, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a procedural vote on H.Res. 518, clearing the way for consideration of H.R. 2913 — the Ukraine Support Act.

This matters.

The Ukraine Support Act is one of the most comprehensive Ukraine-related bills introduced in the 119th Congress. It includes security assistance, stronger sanctions against russia, intelligence cooperation, reconstruction support, and accountability measures for russian war crimes.

At a time when russia continues to attack Ukrainian civilians, cities, energy infrastructure, and cultural sites, this vote shows that support for Ukraine remains an active and urgent issue before Congress.

The Ukrainian National Information Service (UNIS), UCCA’s Washington, D.C. public affairs bureau, urges Ukrainian Americans and all friends of Ukraine to contact their Representative and ask them to vote YES on H.R. 2913, the Ukraine Support Act.

Sample message:

“My name is [Name], and I am a constituent from [City, State]. I urge you to vote YES on H.R. 2913, the Ukraine Support Act. This bill advances critical support for Ukraine, strengthens sanctions against russia, and reinforces America’s commitment to democracy, security, and the rule of law.”
Ukraine needs the tools to defend its people, protect its sovereignty, and resist russia’s ongoing war of terror.

Please contact your Representative today.

Слава Україні.
