New York doesn't always wear its heart on its sleeve. But when it counts, we show up for each other.

Anthony Bourdain understood that better than most. A Manhattan kid who saw the whole world and still came home to the city that made him, he knew that our toughness and our tenderness were never really at odds.

With the A24 movie Tony bringing his story back to the big screen, we're feeling the loss of him all over again. We miss his honesty, his curiosity, and the way he reminded us that the best of any place is its people.

So let's prove him right. Whether it's a neighbor, a classroom, or a stranger who needs a hand, New York comes together when need be. Come together with us. 🧡

📚 Become a virtual tutor and change a student's life.

New York Cares is teaming up with Step Up Tutoring to bring free, high-impact virtual tutoring to 2nd-6th grade students in under resourced communities across NYC, and we're looking for volunteers who want to show up for them.

You'll be matched one-on-one with a student and meet for two 45-minute virtual tutoring sessions each week, in the afternoons or evenings. You pick the schedule directly with your student's family. Commit to a single semester or the full school year, whichever works for you.

You'll get everything you need to succeed:

🔢 Math tutors use EEDI, an adaptive, standards-aligned curriculum
📖 Reading tutors use ReadWorks, with a full library of grade-level fiction and nonfiction
💛 Training, tools, and support so you can focus on what matters: building confidence, connection, and real academic gains

You'll create a fun, supportive space where a young person builds skills, habits, and a relationship they can count on.

What you'll need:

✅ Two 45-minute virtual sessions per week (semester or full year)
✅ A computer (not a tablet) with working video
✅ A cell phone for texting, since all family communication happens via text

Ready to step up? 👇
New to the program? Apply here to get started: https://www.newyorkcares.org/events-programs/step-tutoring

From there, Step Up Tutoring will walk you through a short screening and training, then match you with your student.

Already tutored with us? Reach out to the Tutor Operations team at [email protected] and let them know you'd like to keep going.

Hours served are credited back to your New York Cares account at the end of the program. 🍎

Freshman year is confusing. Volunteering doesn’t have to be.

This fall, every freshman in the CUNY Macaulay Honors Program spent part of their orientation volunteering with New York Cares. 💛

We asked them two things: what’s weird about being a freshman, and what’s the best part of giving back? The answers on freshman year were honest (new campus, new city, figuring it all out), but on giving back? No hesitation.

We’re proud to partner with the Macaulay Honors Program to make service part of how these students start their college journey. Turns out showing up for your community is one of the best ways to find your footing in a new chapter.

Want to volunteer? Visit newyorkcares.org to find your first project.

With plenty of rhinestones and a heart of gold, Dolly Parton made everything beautiful.

From her Imagination Library that has helped children around America access books, to every quiet act of kindness, she will always be a shining example of what it means to give back.

We will always love you, Dolly. 🦋

This week, we kicked off Stand with Students at PAL Harlem Center on August 19 and 20, and it was everything we hoped for. 🎒 Over the next couple of weeks, volunteers, partners, and supporters are coming together to help make sure NYC students head back to school with over 26,400 backpacks filled with the supplies they need to succeed!

We couldn’t do it without our volunteers and partners. A huge thank you to our 2026 sponsors whose generosity powers Stand with Students: Amazin' Mets Foundation, JacobyMeyersNY, PayPal, Macy's, and KPMG. And a special thank you to our board secretary, Keith Grossman, President of MoonPay, for helping lead the way.

We also want to give a big shoutout to our logistics and moving partner, Piece of Cake Moving & Storage®. From heavy lifting to hauling supplies across the city, Piece of Cake Moving and Storage helped make sure everything got where it needed to go so our students could get everything they need.

When our community shows up like this, every child gets a stronger start. This is just the beginning. 🧡

Put those gains to good use. 💪

This 9/11 Day of Service, New York Cares needs Heavy Lifters, and no, we don’t mean your deadlift PR. Heavy Lifters keep our meal-packing operation moving by resupplying tables and loading boxes of packed meals onto pallets. Expect to be on your feet for most of the shift and lifting 50 lbs. or more. It’s a workout with a purpose, and every box you move helps feed New Yorkers in need.

Calling all gym regulars, from Equinox and Crunch Fitness to Blink Fitness, Planet Fitness, Harbor Fitness, and wherever you get gains... Trade the bench for a pallet and show up for your city on September 8-11.

Ready to lift? Sign up to volunteer:

Thank you to our program supporters 9/11 Day and AmeriCorps for helping make this 9/11 Day of Service possible.

Piece of Cake Moving and Storage is proudly the official box and logistics partner of New York Cares for the third year in a row, supporting our Coat Drive and Stand with Students initiatives. Donating 1,550 large boxes and tens of thousands of dollars of logistical support to the current Stand with Students 2026 event.

Twenty-five years ago, New Yorkers answered tragedy with unity, resilience, and compassion. This September, we continue to build a living memorial through acts of kindness and service.

New York Cares is proud to once again partner with 9/11 Day to help stage the largest day of service ever organized in America.

From Tuesday, September 8 through Friday, September 11, more than 1,000 New York Cares volunteers will come together at Pier 86 to help pack meals for New Yorkers facing food insecurity. We’d love for you to be one of them.

No experience needed. You’ll choose your day and shift and pick a role:

📢 Table Captains: Orient volunteers and oversee a set of packing tables.
➡️ Event Support: Check in and direct volunteers, pass out hairnets, and keep things moving.
💪 Heavy Lifters: Resupply tables and load meals onto pallets.

Come be part of an unforgettable tribute to the spirit that carried our city forward.

Your calendar says “touch grass.”
We heard “beer glass.” 🍻

Brews & Views is back, and yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like.

Our Rising Leaders Council has curated all the best vibes for a Saturday out: local brews, wine, specialty food and drinks, lawn games for the competitive among us, and Hudson River views that make everyone’s camera roll look impressive.

Every ticket supports New York Cares and our Stand with Students campaign, which means you get to feel great about your life choices while cracking open a cold one. This is what they call a win-win.

Bring your friends. Bring your questionable co****le technique. Bring your appetite for doing good (and snacks).
