Herald Square, New York (1909)

Herald Square in 1909 was already a bustling shopping and transit hub, anchored by department stores and the newly opened subway lines. Horse-drawn carriages shared the streets with early automobiles, and electric signs started to appear atop buildings. The New York Herald newspaper once operated nearby, lending the square its name. Shoppers flocked to Macy’s and other nearby retailers, making the area a commercial magnet. Herald Square was alive with movement, commerce, and the changing face of modern New York City.
