The Catholic Artists Society

The Catholic Artists Society The Catholic Artists Society is an association of artists and media professionals dedicated to working for the greater glory of God and the common good.

The Catholic Artists Society was initiated in response to Pope Benedict XVI’s Address to Artists at the Sistine Chapel in November, 2009. Following the Holy Father’s call for artists to be “custodians of Beauty” and “heralds and witnesses of Hope for humanity” the society seeks to encourage the ongoing artistic and spiritual development of artists and media professionals, so that their work may mo

re perfectly reflect God’s glory, enriching and ennobling men and women, our society and our culture. The Society’s apostolate is directed to artists in every discipline - architecture, music, the visual, plastic and literary arts, theatre, film, dance and opera - as well as to patrons and audiences. It has three main areas of endeavor: fraternal, spiritual, and intellectual. We have regular liturgies, evenings of recollection and host regular social and artistic events for our members and the general public.

R. J. Snell is editor-in-chief of Public Discourse and director of academic programs at the Witherspoon Institute in Princeton, NJ. Currently he also serves as executive director of the Aquinas Institute for Catholic Life at Princeton University and is a visiting instructor in the department of politics at Princeton.

Please join us to welcome RJ Snell for reception and lecture, Wednesday, April 2nd beginning at 6:30pm. Admission is free with donation encouraged.

Lecture: We have witnessed a conflict of interpretations about the human: either we are like machines or we are spontaneous expressions of freedom. Neither of these interpretations allow for human intelligence as it actually is, and certainly not intelligence in the domains of practical wisdom or poesis. Genuine art, in our time, given the cultural conditions, requires a recovery of intelligence and the role of intelligence in our makings and creativity.
