Today, on International Women’s Day, we are celebrating the women protecting Africa’s wild places.

As an organisation run entirely by women, it gives us so much pride to see women stepping into roles once rarely open to them: leading safaris, protecting wildlife on the frontlines, and guiding the next generation of conservation leaders.

But conservation is also sustained by the countless women working behind the scenes, from caregivers to community leaders whose dedication helps keep both communities and ecosystems thriving.

Their leadership and strength reminds us of something powerful: uplifting women is integral to the success and future of Africa.

Join us as we celebrate the courage, resilience, and leadership of the women protecting Africa’s people, wildlife, and wild places. 🌿

The newly released 2025 Regional Mammal Red List confirms that leopards in South Africa remain classified as Vulnerable, with a continued declining population trend. While their status has not changed since 2016, this update reinforces that the cats are still facing ongoing threats and sustained, evidence-based conservation remains essential.

We are so proud to support the , whose long-term research and data contributions helped inform this regional assessment. Their incredible, on the ground work also ensures that conservation decisions are grounded in real science and truly make a difference.

Thank you to all the experts and partners involved in the updated list. 🐆

We were saddened to hear of the death of Craig, Amboseli’s legendary super tusker elephant, who died peacefully on January 3, 2026 from natural causes. He was 54 years old.

Super tuskers are bull elephants whose tusks weigh 45kg or 100lbs+ each, and are exceptionally rare. They represent a genetic legacy that has survived decades of pressure from poaching and habitat loss, and in the process have become powerful ambassadors for conservation. The exceptional work of organizations like , and has ensured that not only Craig, but an entire ecosystem, has had a chance to thrive.

Our Chair, Krista Krieger, last visited Amboseli in 2020 to see some of these incredible super tuskers. Her visit reinforced for all of us why protecting these bulls (and the community-led conservation that keeps them safe) matters so deeply.

Craig’s life is a true reminder of what sustained protection and conservation efforts make possible, and how urgent it is to keep doing the work.

RIP Craig – you were truly a legend.

We are absolutely thrilled to introduce our Executive Director, Krista Krieger’s interview with the Green Hour Podcast as part of their Concordia Summit Series, recorded at the 15th Annual Concordia Summit in New York City.

In the episode, Krista discusses the very ethos of Empowers Africa, from bridging global philanthropy with grassroots action, to how being an all-female organization shapes our work, and the power of film (and of course, R.E.S.C.U.E that is now being streamed on Apple TV & Amazon Prime).

“Do it with all your heart, don’t expect anything.”

These amazing words are from Dorothy Lowakutuk, one of East Africa’s first female elephant keepers, and the star of R.E.S.C.U.E., our documentary that captures life at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary.

Each rescued elephant is cared for around the clock, fed every three hours, walked through the wild, and gently prepared for life back in the wilderness. R.E.S.C.U.E. celebrates the devotion of Dorothy and her fellow Samburu women, whose compassion and commitment lie at the heart of this community-led conservation story.

And now, R.E.S.C.U.E is streaming on Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video! Please click on the links below to watch:
