The grace, honesty and sportsmanship you showed in a moment of heartbreak reveals you are not only an elite athlete but a gracious human being.

I can’t wait to watch you rise.

116 years ago on this day, Prince's Skating Club in Knightsbridge played host to the very first Olympic figure skating competitions, held in conjunction with the 1908 Summer Olympic Games. Here are some fun facts about those Games you may not know:

- Figure skating was the first winter sport to be added to the modern (Summer) Olympic Games.
- British skaters Edgar Syers and James Henry Johnson both won medals in the pairs event and also served on the organizing committee and acted as stewards to the judges.
- Madge Syers made history as the first skater to win Olympic medals in two disciplines - winning the gold in the women's event and the bronze in the pairs event with her husband Edgar. This feat wasn't repeated until 1936.
- It was the only time that a competition for Special Figures was included in the Games. Competitors had to submit a diagram of a figure of their own design before the competition and also give a verbal description to the judges.
- Men's free skating programs were five minutes long and women's and pairs four. A live band was stationed rinkside and skaters could ask them to play music of their choosing - if they knew it, of course! Skaters were signalled to start their programs by the dropping of a flag. When their time was up, the referee called 'time' and the band and skater were signalled to stop. Skaters weren't allowed to stop skating until instructed by the referee.
- The skating club that played host to the competition had strong ties to the suffragettes.
