St. John's University AAUP Chapter This is the FB page of the St. John's University chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP).

Its purpose is to share information on matters related to collective bargaining at the University.

Joe Trainor joined the faculty of Accounting at St. John’s sixteen years ago because he believed in the university’s mission. For him, having faculty unions represented a major investment in this mission—to protect the vulnerable and give a voice to the voiceless. Now, Joe sees that both the unions and the mission that they serve are under attack by the Administration.

Earlier this week, our Unfair Labor Practice hearing pitted Joe’s faith in the university mission against Shanley and Møller’s drive to consolidate power and violate labor law. As we await the outcome, Joe knows the best way to STAND UP AND FIGHT BACK is to JOIN the AAUP today.

Yesterday was our day in federal court. The administration brought four Proskauer Rose attorneys to argue that the state labor board has no business reviewing its conduct—and Judge Frederic Block spent most of the hearing asking them why this case was in federal court at all.

We'd all like to know.

No timeline for a decision, and the ask is unchanged: join the union, talk to your colleagues, build power together.

They rewrote the rules over the summer and didn't tell anyone.

Under the new Statutes: the Senate can talk, but not decide. The President can suspend you without pay. Discipline no longer requires clear and convincing evidence. You cannot appeal to the Board. Refusal to comply means immediate dismissal.

This is not shared governance.

Read it yourself. University Statutes page, AUGUST 2026, Articles 6 and 100.

Faculty are organizing across campus. That's how this gets undone.

A colleague in the Collins College of Professional Studies puts it plainly: a strong union makes a strong university, and without one, the other is extremely difficult to maintain. As we head back to our classrooms, that's the fight—better conditions for the people teaching the next generation. Here’s the weekly update from our acting president.

Last week, while your SJU-AAUP chapter worked hard on our legal case and faculty outreach, our university leaders laid off many of our valued staff and administration colleagues. Today, we stand with our colleagues. Tomorrow, it could be any of us.

They were doing their jobs. The people who fired them weren't.

Yesterday the St. John's administration eliminated the staff who keep the University running — even had them escorted off campus by Public Safety — and called it a "workforce realignment."

Our full statement is in the slides.

After months of aggressively attacking our faculty rights, the St. John’s administration is now attempting to strip away our role in our university’s educational mission.

But we're spending the summer doing the opposite — listening to colleagues and building a more democratic St. John's. Here's the biweekly update from our acting president.

We stand with the workers of schnepsunion ✊

Local journalism is a public good — not an outgrowth of the gig economy.

The journalists behind amNewYork, Brooklyn Paper, QNS, Bronx Times and more are organizing for living wages, better healthcare, and the integrity of their profession. Our Executive Council's full statement is in the slides.

Follow schnepsunion and show them some solidarity — their fight is the whole city's fight.

One year without a contract.
Not by our choice — by theirs.
For 56 years, our unions spoke for the faculty of St. John's.
This year, the administration walked away from the table and stopped recognizing us at all.
It's been a wild, infuriating year. But here's what all of it failed to do:
make us quit.
We rallied — on campus, at MSG, on May Day.
City and federal officials stood with us.
Colleagues who'd never picketed in their lives showed up and raised their voices.
They say the first anniversary calls for a gift of paper.
We're still waiting on ours: a contract.
So mark the date.
One year in, and we are more organized, more united, and more determined than the day this all started.
And we're not going anywhere.
