Saving Mothers Saving Mothers is a nonprofit dedicated to improving maternal health worldwide. Learn more at www.sa

Saving Mothers is a organization dedicated to eradicating preventable maternal deaths and birth-related complications in the developing world. It is our firm belief that the vast majority of these deaths are due to lack of access to basic reproductive care, and that this lack of access is a human rights violation on a grand scale. At Saving Mothers, we believe that all women are entitled to qualit

y reproductive care, and that their lives, their children's lives, and the basic fabric of society depends on this. Founded and run by medical professionals, our approach to this issue centers on educating and empowering women so they can become active participants in decision-making regarding their sexual and reproductive health. We also educate and train local healthcare providers to ensure that women in low-resource areas have access to the quality of care they deserve.

The work of saving mothers is done in communities, clinics, and classrooms by people who show up.

Here’s a peek at what that looks like.

Meet one of the women we cared for in West Pokot, Kenya.

After living with fibroids, she overcame her fear and chose treatment.

Now, she’s encouraging other women in West Pokot to come see Saving Mothers.

The 10th class of the School of PowHER (Providing Outreach in Women's Health and Educational Resources) in Guatemala launched this March 2025. 12 women have enrolled, and half the class travels from Nahuala, a very rural municipality approximately 56 km away. These women take at least 2 buses and a boat. Plus lots of walking to get the class twice a week. Saving Mothers provides them scholarships so that all costs are covered, including travel and room and board, of needed.
Today's class is about prenatal care, it's importance and how to provide safe prenatal care in the home during pregnancy. We work alongside the Ministry of Health to identify at risk women and get them referred to where they need to be.
Our amazing professional nurse and lead educator, .damian.7, is seen here teaching the importance of documentation and early risk identification done at our initial visit. Josefa was a young comadrona and health promoter when she first worked with our Guatemala Director .jessy_jes15 in 2012. She then participated in the first School of PowHER in 2014 and graduated to then be offered a position and an educator in the school. Shortly after joining our local team, Josefa was sponsored by one of our giving donors to begin her studies to be a nurse. Years later...Josefa is an educated professional, a mother, a wife, a friend, and a leader in her community.

Thank you so much to Mama Glow for having us at their Community Partner Breakfast and inviting us into the Soft Space yesterday! We had a wonderful morning full of croissants, meditation, and discussion about why we’re passionate about maternal health. It was so inspiring to be surrounded by such welcoming, dedicated, and compassionate women!

Our safe birth kits contain simple inexpensive items. These kits can be the difference between life and death for many women in developing countries. They contain everyday items like soap to cleanse the birth mothers’ perineum, a plastic shower curtain to provide a clean surface for delivery, and a razor blade to cut the umbilical cord. These kits contain everything that birth attendants need to ensure safe deliveries outside of the hospital setting and are sent to our Guatemala and Kenya programs.

You can donate just $15 at savingmothers.org/donate to fund one of these kits or host a kit packing event to help assemble them!

As we celebrate Father’s Day, we’re thinking about all of the fathers that have lost their partners to and been impacted by maternal death and maternal health complications.
