Stop asking teenagers what they want to do with their life.
They don’t know. They’re not supposed to. The brain that makes those decisions isn’t even finished forming yet.
What they do need? Goals. And smaller goals inside those goals.
That was the message Wilfred Webster brought to our boys’ conference at Linklaters. Former teacher. Runner-up on The Traitors. BAFTA winner. The kind of CV that doesn’t come from a five-year plan - it comes from saying yes, setting a goal, and figuring out the next small step.
The pressure to “know what you want to do” is one of the heaviest things we put on young shoulders. And it’s the wrong question.
The right question is: what’s one thing you’re going to do this week that moves you in a direction worth moving?

Tell a teenager to find a role model and they’ll picture someone they’ll never meet.
A footballer. A rapper. A face on a screen.
But the role models who actually change a young person’s trajectory tend to be closer than that. The auntie who runs her own business. The youth worker who turns up every week. The professional who looks like them, grew up where they grew up, and made it work.
That’s why we invited Dylan Aupetit to our boys’ conference at Linklaters. Senior Global Partner Account Manager at World Wide Technology. DEI lead. A real person, with a real career in tech, who took real time to be in the room.

A man stood in front of a room of teenage boys at Linklaters and talked about emotion.
Not in a therapy way. In a way that actually landed.
Ragz-CV - spoken word artist, founder of Poetic Unity, ten years of building a charity around the radical idea that boys need somewhere to put what they’re carrying - showed our boys what it looks like when a grown man uses words to make sense of his life.
Here’s what most adults get wrong about boys and emotion. We tell them to “talk about how they feel.” But that’s not the problem. The problem is that we’ve handed them a language built for someone else - a clinical, careful, female-coded language - and then wondered why they go quiet.
Spoken word does something different. It’s rhythm. It’s culture. It’s permission shaped like performance. It lets a boy say what he’s holding without having to admit he’s holding it.
Ragz wasn’t just performing for our boys. He was showing them an outlet. A different way to be a man with something to say.
If you’re a parent, a teacher, or a man who works with young men - this matters. Su***de is still the biggest killer of men under 50 in the UK. Silence is killing them. Spoken word is one of the doors that opens.

The bravest boy in the room isn’t always the loudest one.
Sometimes he’s the one who stayed.
Stayed when the group turned. Stayed with the wrong answer instead of pretending to know. Stayed in his own skin when everyone else was performing.
We tell teens to step out of their comfort zone. But for many young men, the comfort zone is a hiding place. Leaving it doesn’t always look loud - sometimes it looks like quietly choosing to be seen.
At our recent boys’ conference, hosted by Linklaters, we watched it happen.
Parents, teachers, sponsors - this is the courage worth backing.

The teenagers who grow fastest aren’t the most talented ones.
They’re the ones who are willing to look silly.
That was the message a dancer from DanceWest brought to our boys’ conference at Linklaters - and watching the room shift was something else. Because feeling silly isn’t a side effect of learning. It’s the actual price of admission.
Every new skill - dance, public speaking, coding, a language, leadership - starts with you not being good at it. And the only way through is to keep going while it feels uncomfortable. Adults forget this. We perform competence, avoid the things we’d be bad at, and then wonder why we’ve stopped growing.
Teenagers feel this pressure ten times harder. The fear of looking foolish in front of peers is one of the biggest invisible barriers to learning we know of.
So when DanceWest got the boys moving, fumbling, and laughing at themselves - that wasn’t just dance. That was practice for life.
If you’re a parent, a teacher, or a sponsor - the next time a young person hesitates, remember: the willingness to look silly is the most underrated skill we can give them.
