Housing is about more than rent.

It impacts stability, safety, mental health, and overall wellbeing.

This week, New York City announced a major affordable housing proposal that includes plans to build and preserve 400,000 affordable homes over the next decade.

The proposal also includes:
• stronger tenant protections
• investments in NYCHA repairs
• expanded housing preservation efforts

For many individuals and families across New York City, access to safe and affordable housing remains one of the most important factors in building long-term stability and opportunity.

At Believe NY, we know that strong communities begin with access to essential resources and support.

As we head into Memorial Day weekend and continue transitioning into warmer months in NYC, it’s important to remember that community care also means making sure people have access to support and resources when they need them most.

Whether it’s mental health support, food assistance, housing resources, or simply checking in on neighbors and loved ones — small acts of care can make a meaningful difference.

One month is not enough to recognize and appreciate Black history. It lives, breathes, teaches, and transforms us and our work here at Believe, every. single. day.

We carry the words of Maya Angelou with us always:
“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Her influence drives us; our trainings, our interactions with others, and our work with our community. May we lead with impact. May we lead with love. May we make sure people feel seen. ✨

So much gratitude from this weekend! We hosted our annual Volunteer Appreciation Party! 🎉 💖💜

First and foremost, thank you to our volunteers!! Truly the backbone of our work. Your care, compassion, consistency, and heart are what make this community and our impact possible! Thank you for coming out despite the cold weather.

Starting in 2026, provisions of the “Big Beautiful Bill” will weaken the social safety net in ways that ripple through entire communities. This affects all of us... NOT just people who receive services.

In this video, our Executive Director explains how these changes impact everyone, families, workers, caregivers, small businesses, and local systems.

When the safety net breaks down, the consequences harm everyone.
