Attending the upcoming 2021 AMS virtual meeting? Join us on Thursday, November 11 from 12-1:50 pm (Chicago time) for the Committee on Cultural Diversity's sponsored panel, Current Work By Eileen Southern Fellows. This panel celebrates previous recipients of the Eileen Southern Travel Grant (ESTG). The CCD seeks to showcase the research of these scholars, particularly in the emerging and junior career phases, demonstrating the depth and breadth of scholarship undertaken by this diverse cohort. This year's panel includes three papers: "Einstein on the Beach and the Nuclear Event," Anna Gatdula; "Across the Pacific: Performing "Asian" in Western Classical Music," Shelley Zhang; and "Music Notes, Planter History: Beckford, Burney, and the Orphic Silence of Eighteenth-Century Musicology," Devon Borowski. Erika Honisch will serve as respondent.

With these three papers, the CCD launches its new mission of developing a long-term mentoring pipeline that fosters the scholarship and careers of ESTG fellows as a concrete way to cultivate diversity within the AMS and support emerging scholars.

The AMS Committee on Cultural Diversity is delighted to welcome applications for the 2021 cycle of the Eileen Southern Travel Fund (deadline July 1).

Celebrating the legacy of Eileen Southern, a pioneering scholar of Black music, the fund covers the cost of traveling to and attending the annual AMS conference for promising students (undergraduate, terminal master's) from underrepresented backgrounds who are considering further study in musicology. Several awards are given each year.

Because the 2021 annual meeting will be held online, this year’s fellows will have their cost of registration covered and travel to the 2022 conference funded.

Registration is now open for Project Spectrum's pre-conference "Diversifying Music Academia: Strengthening the Pipeline" (October 31 – November 1, 2018), held ahead of the AMS Annual Meeting in San Antonio (Nov 1-4).

https://projectspectrummusic.com/

"Diversifying Music Academia: Strengthening the Pipeline is a symposium devoted to the issue of diversity in music theory, musicology, and ethnomusicology. Led by Project Spectrum, a coalition of graduate students and faculty members, this event seeks to explore why many people marginalized by their race/ethnicity, gender, and/or sexuality continue to have difficulty in finishing graduate degrees, attaining gainful employment, and receiving tenure within all fields of music studies. Furthermore, the aim of this symposium is to develop concrete tools to inspire systematic change within these fields."
