When you work for healthier journalism, you get so much more.

You spend your days with thoughtful, compassionate people who care deeply about others.

Stories that once seemed hard to find become impossible to forget.

The beauty of people in all their complexity becomes a language you can't wait to learn.

And you can see a glimmer of the power that's unlocked when an industry that has sometimes pushed people away becomes a space for everyone.

Journalism's struggles most certainly await us all in 2024. But let's keep listening. Let's keep understanding people in new ways. Let's keep questioning why we work how we work and make new, constructive choices. And let's keep finding each other, the ecstatic and overwhelmed people who know we can reimagine the news and point the way forward by doing it.

To a new year, with new ways.

Two of our favorite solutions journalism descriptors? “Hope with teeth” and “News that works.”

These might pop into your head as you read the recent deep dive into climate news from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. It's a powerful piece of research that reaffirms the negative impact of news coverage that overwhelms and paralyzes readers in the face of climate disasters, inaction, and government complicity.

But it also affirms that adding in solutions journalism to problem-focused journalism can meet a huge demand.

The report clearly illustrates that news consumers (particularly those interested in climate) are clamoring for solutions-oriented news coverage that gives them a sense of possibility and the motivation to remain informed and involved. Not feel-good news, but news that keeps readers engaged in working towards a better future.

The whole thing is loaded with terrific insights, so you should read it. Of course, we're most partial to the solutions journalism bits. Because those bits show that people don't think solutions journalism (including "coverage that evaluates the success of different solutions to climate change" ding ding ding!) is fluff or not news or activism. They think it's an essential piece of journalism's mission.

Across more and more surveys and studies, people are calling out for the news they want 🙋 🙋🏽 🙋🏾 🗣️. Maybe in comment sections or inboxes or thinking to yourself at home, you have too.

Audience dissatisfaction with the news media isn't usually a big surprise to us. After all, our entire mission at Solutions Journalism Network is to help create : journalism that focuses on response to problems, whether they're working, and what can be learned. So what's the big surprise?

Media research firm Smith Geiger recently surveyed people about their feelings on political journalism. Almost half the respondents think the media *wants* to divide the country. That's a HUGE number. The other big bit of news is that more than half the respondents dissatisfied with political journalism believe that more focus on covering solutions is something they would be more likely to pay attention to.
