Compass Charter School

Compass Charter School Compass is an intentionally diverse, inclusive, and progressive elementary school located in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.

We currently enroll students in pre-kindergarten through 5th grade. Mission
Compass is a safe and nurturing educational environment that honors the individuality of each learner. By engaging in a process of inquiry, our graduates will be equipped with the necessary skills to lead fulfilling personal and professional lives, including a developed sense of self, the ability to think in innovative and

flexible ways, and the inspiration to make a positive impact on their community. School Overview
We value the inquiry process and students at all grade levels will engage in meaningful interdisciplinary projects. Students will participate in a variety of research practices, including observations, question development, interviews, artifact collection, field visits, note-taking and hands-on experiments. In an ever changing world, we believe that it is crucial for our students to learn to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. As a result of this, our students will study their relationship with the world through the lens of sustainability. Our students will participate in interdisciplinary projects focused on the living world, social justice, and economic justice. Children use literacy skills across all subject areas. We will bring these capacities to the surface by teaching specific reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing content outlined in the Common Core State Standards. Using a balanced literacy framework, our students will engage in a daily reading workshop, writing workshop, word study session, and read aloud in addition to integrated literacy work. The mathematics program at CCS will emphasize student-driven exploration, problem solving, collaborative group work, and discussion that supports the conceptual understanding of mathematics. Teachers and arts specialists will integrate the arts into core subject areas as a channel for learning, communication, expression, and creativity. Teachers and arts specialists will collaboratively plan arts-integrated units of study and our schedule will include time for arts teachers to co-teach with each classroom teacher. Students in grades K-5 will loop with their classmates and teachers for two consecutive school years (K-1, 2-3, 4-5). Teachers will develop a deeper view of each child in their classroom and will be able to tailor instruction to meet student needs due to this longer relationship. We welcome your feedback on our school model. Please feel free to contact us at [email protected].

On Tuesday, March 31st, Compass students, families, and all staff are encouraged to help us recognize and bring awareness to Trans Day of Visibility. This day is dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments, joy, and resilience of transgender and non-binary people while raising awareness of the discrimination they face worldwide.
The students who help steer the leadership of our school’s GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance) felt strongly that we should recognize this day and uplift the experiences of trans folx in our Compass community and beyond our walls.
We will do this by inviting everyone to wear the colors of the Trans flag on that day which are pink, blue and white. If you have Compass shirts of those colors, great, if not please still participate by wearing one of those colors on Tuesday March 31st. If your child does not have a Compass shirt that represents the colors of the Trans flag, they may wear something else on 3/31.
Taking this action is a way to live up to one of the BLM Guiding Principals for Education which is Trans Affirming. It may seem small, but showing solidarity with the Trans community during these trying times can help save lives.
Last week, there was an announcement at Community Gathering to speak to this advocacy action. Staff were also given language to use in the classroom that is developmentally appropriate for each age group in explaining why we are being asked to wear the colors of the Trans Flag. This initiative aligns with our school’s values of social justice and inclusion, and we continue to work to give voice to marginalized experiences in our community that need care and amplification.

We’re so excited for Compass 2nd graders to go visit The Yard, an adventure playground on Governors Island, this Spring. Our Sustainability Studio team, Lizzie & Anna, spent the day helping get The Yard ready for spring playing: Raking leaves, sorting materials for trash or compost, and meeting some wonderful Playworkers.

Compass & The Yard share many values including the importance of play in learning, supporting all kids, building skills of independence early on, and embracing the joy of reuse and upcycling of “trash”.

Fun Fact: Compass staff members were the first group of adults to play in The Yard back in 2015! We had a blast.

“play:groundNYC is reimagining the urban environment as a place for all children to play, create and explore. We do this by providing spaces for young people to play, providing professional development, school programming and training a new generation of playworkers.”
