We were thrilled to participate in this year’s Youth Climate Summit on Governors Island, bringing together hundreds of passionate middle and high school students for an inspiring day! Hosted by the NYC Public Schools Office of Energy & Sustainability, student teams dove into hands-on workshops exploring engineering, the arts, sustainable food systems, wildlife preservation, and social justice. Green Beetz held workshops on food and the environment, and career opportunities in this field.

A massive thank you to the OES Youth Leadership Council and all the partners who made this impactful event possible!

Yesterday Green Beetz team helped students at set up a Food Waste Audit!

Did you know….???!
🥕 U.S. public schools throw away more than 530,000 tons of food every year 🤯 That’s mountains of untouched apples, milk cartons, and pizza slices headed straight for the trash.

🌎 Food waste = climate waste. When school lunches rot in landfills, they release methane, a greenhouse gas far more powerful than CO₂ 💨🔥

💧 Every uneaten lunch wastes the resources used to make it — water, energy, farmland, fuel, and labor. One wasted burger alone can represent 600+ gallons of water 🍔🚰

💸 Schools spend millions on food students never eat — while many districts are struggling to fund classrooms, teachers, and programs 📚✏️
