🥁 He played his first paying gig at seven years old.
Jacob Rosenberg sat with the New York Philharmonic and the NBC Symphony. Then he became the first president of Local 802, the most powerful musicians' union in America.
✊ In 1936 he stood up at the founding of the National Negro Congress and called for desegregated unionism, back when the AFL was still built on segregation. He put Black members on his union staff and the first Black Executive Board member was elected under him.
🕯️ He died in 1946 at fifty. Billboard called him a rebel.
He rests at Mount Hebron. May his memory be a blessing.

🌳 In our oldest sections, the stones are carved as trees.
🕯️ The height is the age. A broken log is a life that never started. A low stump is a child.
🌿 Hyman Greenspan was eighteen. One branch broken clean off. He had no children, so that branch is not someone he lost. It is him.
🍃 The leaves are the descendants. Dora Cohen was twenty nine and her tree came down while it was still in leaf.
✨ Louis Rochester got the tallest tree in the section. His stone reads only beloved son and brother. Those leaves were never his children. They are the family he came from.
🤍 Height for the years. Leaves for the family. Now you know.

Welcome back to !
At times, people want to preserve the memory of their loved one by making their final resting place as personal as their relationship was. Here we see a stone with the etching of a camera and books. Apparently, this person was an avid runner who loved their sparkling water and New Year’s celebrations. ❤
Whenever I pass a resting place like this one, I know that their legacy is not only alive but active in the thoughts and memories of their loved ones. It is a more common find inside a of private mausoleum. However, it is a beautiful sentiment.

🌳🪦 A broken limb on the tree of life. Solomon Graff’s headstone tells a story without words. Born 1896, gone too soon at 45, this carved memorial captures grief and love in stone. Beloved husband, dear father, remembered forever. 🕊️✨

Anita Siegel. 1939 to 2011. Brilliant artist. Beloved friend.

🎨 Carved beneath her name is a fragment of Langston Hughes, a song for the genius child, meant to be sung softly because the song is wild. Hughes wrote about the kind of brilliance the world does not quite know how to hold.

✨ Whoever chose those lines knew exactly who she was. Poetry says the things plain language cannot reach, and a family reached for it here.

🪨 Some monuments read like a page you have to learn to translate.

The Lieblich stone at Mount Hebron is covered in carved language. Priestly hands. Two lions. An open Torah. A menorah. A flame burning between two names.

📖 Irving. Marion. Beloved husband and wife. Their children carved a promise across the top. May we ever uphold their noble heritage.

🔍 The side panels hold even more, and we are still working through them. Look closely and tell us what you find.

✍️ Some stones tell you what a person did. This one tells you who he was. David Twersky's monument at Mount Hebron names him a gentleman poet, a devoted husband, a proud and loving father and grandfather, and an artist who painted with words. 🌈 Beneath his name, carved in both Russian and English, are lines from his own hand about a bridge of love, a joining of two hearts, a rainbow that forever paints the sky. He chose to be remembered in the language he left behind and the language he made a life in, and both are still speaking. 🪨 A poet is an artist the same way a painter or a singer is, working in rhyme and phrase instead of pigment and sound, and David understood that about himself well enough to put it in granite.

🔥 Some families choose a symbol instead of a sentence.

The Sinnreich stone carries a flame rising from a shallow bowl. The lamp of knowledge.

📖 Beneath it, a line worth reading twice. If human desire can be subdued, it is with reason. If human spirit can be lifted, it is with knowledge.

✡️ Most survivors have the word carved into the granite. This family chose gold.

Frieda and Beinish Bornstein rest side by side at Mount Hebron. A menorah above her name. A Star of David above his. And beside each one, a small gold plaque naming them Holocaust survivors.

🕯️ Two people who came through the worst of the century, found each other, built a family, and grew old in Queens.

🌿 We do not yet know how they met. We would like to. If anyone in their family sees this, we would love to hear the story.

🎣 Most stones tell you who someone was. This one tells you how he spent a Saturday.

Leon. 1923 to 2008. Beloved husband. Loving father. Devoted grandfather.

☕ Carved around his name are the things he actually loved. A fishing rod. A slot machine. A coffee and a donut.

😊 And across the bottom, four words his family knew were his. Don't worry, be happy.

That is a whole life in a few small pictures. May his memory continue to be a blessing.
