A Tribute to a True Mentor: Mr. John Dorman

Finding a mentor who supports you unconditionally is one of life’s rarest gifts—so rare, I’d compare it to a solar eclipse. It doesn’t happen often, and when it does, you stop everything to take it in and never forget it.

That’s why I try not to complain. I’ve been fortunate—blessed, really—to have been surrounded by people who embody aretê, the Greek ideal of virtue in action. They don’t just talk about principles—they live them.

Let me tell you about Mr. John Dorman. He hired me on June 18, 2013, and changed my life. As a student of Stoicism, I’m drawn to those who lead by quiet example. Mr. Dorman is one of the truest Stoics I’ve known. I once asked how he stays so composed leading one of NYC’s most prestigious private clubs. He simply smiled and turned the conversation back to me. That moment said it all.

He lives his values daily—grace under pressure, humility, and unshakable integrity. In November 2024, when I received the Catalyst for Change Award from Disability Rights Advocates, I was asked who should introduce me. My answer was immediate: Mr. Dorman.

He may not be a household name in hospitality, but he represents everything right about it. After 28 years as GM, he’s retiring. To honor his legacy, we’re naming a new award at Wine on Wheels: The Andrea and John Dorman Award—in memory of his late wife and in recognition of a life lived with purpose.

Mr. Dorman never asks for recognition. But he’s earned it—every bit of it.
