Volunteers of Legal Service

Volunteers of Legal Service provides free, civil legal services in New York City by partnering with law firms, companies, and community-based groups.

We empower New Yorkers to attain dignity, security, and opportunity. Now for 35 years, VOLS harnesses the capacity of New York City's legal community and neighborhood-based groups to provide free, civil legal services when and where they are needed most. VOLS' five legal projects empower our neighbors to attain dignity, security, and opportunity in their lives, including our Children’s Project, El

derly Project and Veterans Initiative, Immigration Project, Incarcerated Mothers Law Project, and Microenterprise Project. We collaborate with 210 community-based groups – such as schools or senior centers – to ensure that New Yorkers can learn about and access our services in a trusted setting. VOLS' expert legal team works alongside a network of 1,000+ pro bono attorneys at over 60 law firms and corporate law departments to help anchor the social and economic safety net in New York City.

Last week, SLP held a future planning presentation in Mandarin and Cantonese for older adults at Homecrest Community Services Sheepshead Bay Center. Happy Pride! VOLS celebrates Pride and stands in solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community in the ongoing pursuit of equality and justice. We are particularly proud to highlight our long-standing collaboration SAGE, which helps LGBTQ+ elders thrive! This week, VOLS Benefits Law Project held a rent freeze legal clinic at SAGE Harlem with pro bono partners Kirkland & Ellis and Gibson Dunn, where we helped older adults assess their eligibility and apply for vital public benefits that help them remain in their homes.

We had a blast at the VOLS PBAC Summer Soirée! Our partners turned out to compete in a professionally run scavenger hunt: solving clues, competing in photo challenges, and working as a team. A meaningful conversation about closing the access to justice gap followed. In celebration of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, we’re proud to highlight our recent work supporting our AANHPI clients and community partners. VOLS Microenterprise Project was in Chinatown this past weekend presenting Legal Essentials for Small Business to a group of entrepreneurs alongside the Chinatown Manpower Project and pro bono partner Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP. Over in Sunset Park, VOLS Senior Law Project held a Future Planning presentation in Mandarin for a group of older adults served by the United Cultural Association.

The VOLS Incarcerated Mothers Law Project (IMLP) provides family law support to clients who most likely would not otherwise get to speak with a family law attorney. Yesterday, VOLS IMLP and pro bono volunteers traveled to Taconic Correctional Facility to hold a legal clinic and provide advocacy, education, and counsel to mothers and parents. We are grateful to our pro bono partners Con Edison, Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP, and Kirkland & Ellis for their support.

We are grateful for our pro bono partners! Last week, VOLS Senior Law Project teamed up with Morrison & Foerster LLP for an ex*****on clinic to help older adults plan for their future. Further uptown, VOLS Benefits Law Project and pro bono partners helped older adults from JASA’s St. Martin’s Tower NORC Program assess their eligibility and apply for critical benefits, including for NYC’s Rent Freeze programs.
