Volunteers of Legal Service Volunteers of Legal Service provides free, civil legal services in New York City by partnering with law firms, companies, and community-based groups.

We empower New Yorkers to attain dignity, security, and opportunity. Now for 35 years, VOLS harnesses the capacity of New York City's legal community and neighborhood-based groups to provide free, civil legal services when and where they are needed most. VOLS' five legal projects empower our neighbors to attain dignity, security, and opportunity in their lives, including our Children’s Project, Elderly Project and Veterans Initiative, Immigration Project, Incarcerated Mothers Law Project, and Microenterprise Project. We collaborate with 210 community-based groups – such as schools or senior centers – to ensure that New Yorkers can learn about and access our services in a trusted setting. VOLS' expert legal team works alongside a network of 1,000+ pro bono attorneys at over 60 law firms and corporate law departments to help anchor the social and economic safety net in New York City.

This Black Business Month, VOLS is proud to celebrate the stories of Black small business owners supported by the VOLS Microenterprise Project (MEP). VOLS MEP clients Danhy Clermont and Donovan Thompson are the founders of Stranger Fruit Universe, an independent media studio creating cultural and social impact series for Black and BIPOC millennials and Gen Z. VOLS first connected with Danhy and Donovan through our legal services partnership with the NYC Department of Small Business Services' Black Entrepreneurs NYC (BE NYC) initiative. VOLS MEP and pro bono volunteers helped Danhy and Donovan form their business, protect their intellectual property, and create contracts. "VOLS has been an amazing partner to us during these early stages of our business when every legal decision is crucial. Because of their help, we are confident that our business's foundation is rock solid." In the fall of 2026, Stranger Fruit Universe plans to open its own studio in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. For National Make-A-Will Month, we’re proud to spotlight the work of the VOLS Senior Law Project, which empowers older adults to create legally enforceable life planning documents that reflect their unique wishes and preferences and effectively prepare for incapacity and death. This planning is often oriented to strengthening the informal familial supports intended to assist people as they age and preserving assets for the next generation. August is Black Business Month! VOLS is proud to celebrate the stories of Black small business owners supported by the VOLS Microenterprise Project (MEP). VOLS MEP client George Howell is the Founder and Executive Chef of Georgi Caterer NYC, a Brooklyn-based catering company dedicated to creating exceptional culinary experiences throughout New York City. Like many small business owners, George faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. He rebuilt his business step by step, guided by his commitment to community, diversity, honesty, and transparency. Today, Georgi Caterer NYC partners with local organizations, businesses, and families to create memorable events that celebrate culture, connection, and hospitality. To continue safeguarding and growing his business, George connected with VOLS MEP through our partnership with NYC Department of Small Business Services' Black Entrepreneurs NYC initiative. We reached out to George to ask about his experience working with VOLS:
