The Traumatic Impact of the Dissolution of the Family: An Interdisciplinary Approach, is packed with innovative presentations which enrich our understanding and skills to help family members experiencing multiple stressors and potential psychological trauma as they navigate the process of family dissolution.
The presentations address the effects of cultural discrimination, systemic racism, and sexism including LGBTQ biases that families experience both prior to and during the process of family dissolution. The conference also looks specifically at the stressors and potential psychological trauma within those families with a special needs child, a mentally ill parent, as well as the impact of the malignant phenomenon of parental alienation on separating and divorcing families. It also attempts to unpack the contributions of the court process, mediation efforts, collaborative law, and mental health treatment services to mitigating and even exacerbating the psychological stress and potential trauma for these families. The important conference theme, What Can We Do ?, is woven throughout the conference.
We hope this conference leads to lasting change in how separating and/or divorcing families are viewed and treated, psychologically and legally, in the family dissolution process. As our knowledge and skills become more sophisticated in identifying, understanding, and coping with these stressors and potential psychological trauma as they emerge in those families we interface with, and within ourselves as the professionals helping them to traverse this critical life journey, our interventions will become more meaningful to the children and parents we serve.
