On International Child Helpline Day, we recognise the incredible work of child helplines — and the dedicated staff and volunteers who ensure that no child or young person goes unheard.

Somewhere in the world, a child or young person reaches out to a child helpline every 5 seconds. Every 12 seconds, a child or young person receives counselling support. Child helplines provide a vital, accessible pathway for children to seek help, protection, information and support when they need it most.

ChildFund Alliance is working towards a world where every child is safe, protected, and heard. That’s why we join Child Helpline International in calling for a child helpline to be available in every country by the end of 2030.

ChildFund Alliance members Children Believe, Educo, and WeWorld Global are closely monitoring the deteriorating situation in Mali, following a recent escalation in violence and conflict.

UNICEF has warned that children are paying the highest price of the ongoing violence, with recent attacks affecting civilians, schools and health facilities. Every child has the right to be safe, protected and able to access the support they need — including in times of crisis.

Our members remain focused on continuing emergency assistance, while also considering additional interventions to support children and families, including food assistance, health and nutrition programming, and education in emergencies.

This year’s focus for International Day Of Families is on the widening inequalities that shape the lives of families and children.

ChildFund Alliance joins the call to strengthen social protection systems — including parental leave, affordable childcare and early education — to reduce poverty and support families through times of pressure and change.

When families have the support they need, children are better able to learn, participate, feel safe and thrive.

ChildFund CEO Isam Ghanim warns that across Africa, digital access for young people is expanding faster than online safety. UNICEF research shows that around 1 in 10 children in eastern and southern Africa have experienced some form of online abuse.

But, Ghanim argues, African leaders have an opportunity to learn from the experience of other nations and take a different path: “As connectivity accelerates, there is still an opportunity to embed safety alongside access — to build protections into systems before harm becomes entrenched.”

Restricting migration does not stop people from moving — but it can push them into taking more dangerous routes. That is the warning from IOM - UN Migration’s latest World Migration Report, which calls for safe and regular pathways to be expanded alongside efforts to address irregular migration.

The report also highlights migration’s powerful contribution to development, with remittances reaching an estimated US$905 billion globally in 2024. As IOM Director General Amy E. Pope writes, public debate often focuses disproportionately on irregular migration, “which represents only a small share of global mobility but can create serious protection concerns for migrants and complex policy dilemmas for States.”

Since 2000, the World MIgration Report is IOM´s flagship publication with data, statistics, maps and global research on migration, economics, society and policy on human mobility.

Everyday in Gaza, a short documentary produced by ChildFund Alliance member WeWorld Global, has won the 2026 Premi David di Donatello for Best Short Film.

Directed by Omar Rammal and filmed by Soliman Hijjy in Gaza, the documentary offers an intimate look at daily life in the Strip — the routines, relationships and small acts of resilience that continue amid crisis. Accepting the award, Omar Rammal said: “This award does not belong to me, but to the people who risked their lives to document the truth. Those who filmed in Gaza carried a camera in one hand and their own pain in the other.”

WeWorld’s Dina Taddia said the documentary was made to give visibility to the people of Gaza, and to show what often remains off-camera: the daily lives of those trying to endure among the rubble, rebuild routines after displacement, and survive amid fear, loss and uncertainty.

The latest Global Report on Food Crises warns that the number of people facing catastrophic hunger is now nine times higher than it was in 2016, largely driven by conflict and forced displacement. It estimates that 35.5 million children are acutely malnourished globally, often driven by the simultaneous failure of food access, disease prevention, and essential services for children and women.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres notes: “Ending hunger is a test of our shared humanity. It is a test we cannot fail.”

Ending violence must start in childhood.

Sarah Hunt, Global Programs Director at ChildFund Australia, explains why earlier action matters — and why laws, services and funding must be designed around the needs and rights of children and young people, not adapted from adult systems.

“The earlier we act, the greater the chance we have to prevent harm before it happens and change the systems that allow it to persist.”

Violence against women doesn’t begin in adulthood – its drivers are established much earlier, in childhood, and reinforced over time.

The World Food Programme has launched HungerMap Live, a new platform offering one of the most comprehensive and up-to-date pictures of hunger across some of the world’s most vulnerable countries.

It also includes AI-assisted forecasting of projected food needs in 16 WFP-designated hunger hotspots, where populations are already facing catastrophic hunger.

Tools like this can help strengthen early warning, improve targeting and support faster humanitarian action.
