Although the terms are frequently used interchangeably, there are some distinct distinctions between the two activities:

Hiking

* Hiking is a short-distance outdoor activity that is ideal for day trips and is suitable for most fitness levels. Examples include walking trails in national parks and local mountain hikes.

Trekking

* Trekking is a multi-day adventure through natural landscapes that often involves overnight stays in lodges, camps, or teahouses. It requires greater endurance and preparation. Examples include the Everest Base Camp Trek, Annapurna Circuit Trek, and Trail.

In the Himalayas

Activities such as the Everest Base Camp Trek, Gokyo Trek, Three Passes Trek, Peakye Trek, and Annapurna Circuit are generally classified as trekking rather than hiking because they involve multiple days of walking, significant elevation gain, and remote mountain environments.

Simple rule:

पर्वतारोहण श्रमिकहरूको सुरक्षा, बीमा र सम्मानित भविष्यका लागि राष्ट्रिय अभियान

हामी, नेपालका माउन्टेन क्लाइम्बर, ट्रेकिङ गाइड, माउन्टेन लिडर, पोर्टर, तथा पर्यटन क्षेत्रमा कार्यरत सबै श्रमिकहरूको प्रतिनिधिहरू, आज यो घोषणा गर्दछौं कि हाम्रो जीवन, सुरक्षा र भविष्य लामो समयदेखि उपेक्षित हुँदै आएको छ।

नेपालको हिमाल संसारको गौरव हो। तर यी हिमाल चढाउने हातहरू गाइड, पोर्टर र क्लाइम्बरहरूको जीवन भने अझै पनि असुरक्षित, जोखिमपूर्ण र न्यून संरक्षणमा छ।

आज हामी स्पष्ट रूपमा भन्छौं

१. बीमाको गम्भीर कमी

• पर्याप्त जीवन बीमा नहुनु
• दुर्घटना तथा अपाङ्गता बीमामा कमजोरी
• मृत्यु पश्चात परिवारलाई न्यून वा अपर्याप्त क्षतिपूर्ति
• उद्धार तथा शव व्यवस्थापन खर्चको स्पष्ट व्यवस्था नहुनु

२. मृत्यु पश्चात अधिकारको अभाव

• श्रमिकको मृत्यु भएपछिको परिवारको भविष्य अनिश्चित हुनु
• आश्रित परिवारलाई दीर्घकालीन सुरक्षा नहुनु
• सामाजिक सुरक्षा प्रणाली कमजोर हुनु

३. सेवानिवृत्ति (Retirement) नीति नहुनु

• ६०–६५ वर्षपछि काम गर्न नसक्ने अवस्थामा कुनै स्पष्ट नीति नहुनु
• अनुभवी श्रमिकहरूको सम्मानजनक व्यवस्थापन नहुनु
• पेन्सन वा नियमित सामाजिक सुरक्षा भत्ता नहुनु

हाम्रो मागहरू (Our Demands)

हामी निम्न मागहरू तत्काल कार्यान्वयन गर्न जोडदार माग गर्दछौं:

1. सबै माउन्टेन क्लाइम्बर, गाइड, पोर्टरहरूको लागि अनिवार्य र उच्चस्तरीय जीवन तथा दुर्घटना बीमा
2. मृत्यु भएमा परिवारलाई न्यूनतम सम्मानजनक क्षतिपूर्ति र दीर्घकालीन सहयोग
3. उद्धार, उपचार र शव व्यवस्थापन खर्च पूर्ण रूपमा बीमा प्रणालीभित्र समावेश
4. ६० वा ६५ वर्षपछि अनिवार्य सेवानिवृत्ति नीति लागू गर्ने व्यवस्था
5. सेवानिवृत्त श्रमिकका लागि मासिक पेन्सन वा सामाजिक सुरक्षा भत्ता
6. पर्वतारोहण श्रमिकहरूको लागि छुट्टै राष्ट्रिय सुरक्षा कोष (Welfare Fund) स्थापना

Executive Summary
On behalf of all individuals engaged in Nepal’s tourism sector, including mountaineering guides, trekking guides, mountain leaders, high-altitude workers, porters, and other tourism professionals, we respectfully submit this petition requesting the establishment of a comprehensive social security protection program for tourism workers and their families.
Nepal’s mountain tourism industry is one of the nation’s most valuable economic sectors and a significant source of international recognition. The success of this industry relies heavily on the dedication, courage, and hard work of thousands of tourism workers who operate in the Himalayas, trekking regions, trekking peaks, and other remote and high-risk environments.
These workers face considerable occupational hazards, including severe injuries, permanent disabilities, and loss of life while carrying out their professional responsibilities. Despite their immense contribution to the national economy and the promotion of Nepal’s global tourism image, many workers and their families remain without adequate social protection when tragedy occurs.

Call to Action

We have observed several concrete instances that underscore the pressing necessity for social protection within Nepal’s tourism sector. A few years ago, we provided financial assistance to a Nepali mountain guide who was grappling with a severe illness. Similarly, we organized support for a tourism worker who sustained a leg injury in a landslide and was compelled to confront a life-altering disability.

These occurrences illustrate the substantial risks encountered by tourism workers and the paramount importance of establishing a robust social security framework to provide them and their families with support during periods of adversity.

Consequently, we extend an invitation to all mountain guides, trekking guides, mountain leaders, high-altitude workers, porters, tourism professionals, and their respective associations and organizations to unite in support of this cause. Collaboratively, we can advocate for the safeguarding, well-being, and future security of those who dedicate their lives to Nepal’s tourism industry.

Only through unity can we achieve enduring social security measures, healthcare support, educational opportunities, and welfare programs for tourism workers and their families.

Let us stand together and fortify the collective voice for the rights, dignity, and social protection of Nepal’s tourism workforce.

Miracle on Mount Everest: Nepali Guide Found Alive After Six Days Missing

A Nepali climbing guide who was feared dead after going missing high on Mount Everest has been found alive after surviving alone for six days in one of the world’s harshest environments.

Veteran guide Hillary Dawa Sherpa, 52, disappeared on May 30 while descending from the upper slopes of Everest. With no contact and little hope of survival, family members had already begun performing last rites.

In an extraordinary turn of events, Dawa Sherpa was discovered near Everest Base Camp on June 4, crawling down the mountain after enduring nearly a week in extreme cold, thin air, and dangerous conditions. He was found by a team from the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee and immediately evacuated by helicopter to Kathmandu for medical treatment. Reports indicate he is conscious and recovering despite suffering frostbite.

His survival is being hailed as one of the most remarkable self-rescue stories in Everest history and a powerful testament to the resilience, strength, and determination of Nepal’s mountain guides.

नेपालका पर्वतारोहण Mountain Guide,Tekking Guide and Npal Mountain Leader, उच्च हिमाली क्षेत्रमा कार्यरत श्रमिक, भरिया तथा सम्पूर्ण पर्यटन श्रमिकहरूको हकहित, सुरक्षा र सामाजिक न्यायका लागि हामी आजदेखि “पर्यटन श्रमिक सामाजिक सुरक्षा संरक्षण अभियान” को औपचारिक शुभारम्भ गर्दछौं।
यस अभियानमार्फत नेपाल सरकारसमक्ष पर्यटन क्षेत्रमा कार्यरत श्रमिक तथा तिनका परिवारका लागि स्पष्ट मापदण्ड, योग्यता र कार्यान्वयन संयन्त्रसहितको समग्र सामाजिक सुरक्षा संरक्षण कार्यक्रम स्थापना गर्न निम्न मागहरू प्रस्तुत गर्दछौं।
पर्यटन श्रमिक तथा तिनका परिवारका लागि समग्र सामाजिक सुरक्षा संरक्षण कार्यक्रम स्थापना गर्ने सम्बन्धमा

नेपालको पर्यटन क्षेत्रमा कार्यरत पर्वतारोहण (Mountain Guides), ट्रेकिङ गाइड, Mountain Leader, उच्च हिमाली क्षेत्रमा कार्यरत श्रमिक, भरिया तथा अन्य सम्पूर्ण पर्यटन श्रमिकहरूको तर्फबाट हामी यो निवेदन सम्मानपूर्वक नेपाल सरकारसमक्ष प्रस्तुत गर्दछौं।
नेपालको हिमाली पर्यटन उद्योग राष्ट्रको अर्थतन्त्रको एक महत्वपूर्ण आधारस्तम्भ तथा अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय पहिचानको प्रमुख स्रोत हो। हिमाल, ट्रेकिङ मार्ग, ट्रेकिङ शिखर तथा अन्य दुर्गम र उच्च जोखिमयुक्त क्षेत्रमा कार्यरत हजारौं पर्यटन श्रमिकहरूको साहस, समर्पण र अथक परिश्रमले नै नेपालको पर्यटन उद्योगलाई विश्वसामु गौरवान्वित बनाएको छ।
तर, आफ्नो पेशागत कर्तव्य निर्वाह गर्ने क्रममा यी श्रमिकहरूले हरेक वर्ष गम्भीर चोटपटक, स्थायी अपाङ्गता तथा ज्यान गुमाउने जस्ता उच्च जोखिम सामना गर्नुपरेको छ। राष्ट्रको आर्थिक समृद्धि तथा पर्यटन प्रवर्द्धनमा महत्वपूर्ण योगदान पुर्‍याए पनि दुर्घटना वा विपत्तिको अवस्थामा उनीहरू र तिनका परिवारका लागि पर्याप्त सामाजिक सुरक्षा व्यवस्था उपलब्ध छैन।
यस वास्तविकतालाई मध्यनजर गर्दै, पर्यटन श्रमिकहरूको योगदान, सेवा र बलिदानको सम्मानस्वरूप नेपाल सरकारले निम्न व्यवस्था सहितको विशेष सामाजिक सुरक्षा कार्यक्रम स्थापना गर्नुपर्ने माग गर्दछौं:

१. निःशुल्क शिक्षा
यदि कुनै पर्यटन श्रमिकले आफ्नो कर्तव्य निर्वाह गर्ने क्रममा ज्यान गुमाए वा स्थायी रूपमा अशक्त भएमा, निजको परिवारका कम्तीमा दुई जना सन्तानलाई उच्च माध्यमिक तहसम्म निःशुल्क शिक्षा प्रदान गरियोस्।

२. निःशुल्क स्वास्थ्य बीमा
प्रभावित परिवारका कम्तीमा दुई जना सन्तानलाई गुणस्तरीय स्वास्थ्य सेवामा पहुँच सुनिश्चित गर्न नेपाल सरकारले पूर्ण रूपमा निःशुल्क स्वास्थ्य बीमा सुविधा उपलब्ध गराई आवश्यक उपचार, औषधोपचार तथा स्वास्थ्य सेवाको खर्च वहन गर्ने व्यवस्था गरियोस्।

हामी नेपाल सरकारसमक्ष सामाजिक न्याय, श्रमिक कल्याण तथा नेपालको पर्यटन उद्योगको दिगो विकासको हितमा माथि उल्लिखित मागहरू यथाशीघ्र कार्यान्वयन गर्न हार्दिक आग्रह गर्दछौं। पर्यटन क्षेत्रमा कार्यरत श्रमिकहरू, पर्वतारोहण मार्गदर्शकहरू, ट्रेकिङ गाइडहरू, उच्च हिमाली क्षेत्रमा कार्यरत श्रमिकहरू, भरियाहरू तथा तिनका परिवारहरूको सुरक्षा, सम्मान र भविष्य सुनिश्चित गर्नु राज्यको महत्वपूर्ण दायित्व हो भन्ने हाम्रो विश्वास छ।
