Inuit religious traditions, shared by Inuit peoples of Alaska, Canada, and Greenland, inspired several Greenland stamp issues between 1957 and 1969.

Greenland’s first commemorative stamp, issued in 1957, depicts a scene from the legend of the Mother of the Sea. The 60 øre blue stamp shows Sedna, the sea goddess associated with marine life, seated along the shore with sea animals.

The stamp was designed by Jens Rosing, a prolific Greenlandic artist known for his effective treatment of cultural subjects.

The Republic of Molossia is a self-declared micronation founded by Kevin Baugh in 1977 and located on about 11 acres near Dayton, Nevada. Though unrecognized by any government, it operates with its own president, currency (the Valora), time zone, and space program. In 1976, Alec Brackstone, alarmed by Australia's drift towards a republic, declared his four-hectare farm in Bumbunga, South Australia, the independent "Province of Bumbunga" to ensure a portion of the continent remained loyal to the British Crown. He appointed himself governor-general and issued postage stamps and currency featuring the British royal family, creating a micronation to express his patriotic views.

The Principality of Sealand, a self-declared micronation located on an old World War II anti-aircraft fort in the North Sea, has produced various coins and stamps aimed at collectors. These items are marked in “Sealand dollars” (SX$). However, Sealand’s coins function solely as souvenirs or commemorative rounds, as they are not in circulation and are not recognized as legal currency by any country.

Today we honor On Kawara (December 24, 1932 – July 10, 2014) On Kawara was a Japanese conceptual artist who lived in SoHo, New York City, from 1965 until his death. For over ten years, every single day, On Kawara sent out a postcard to two friends or colleagues telling them what time he'd got up; he also drew a map of where he'd gone in whatever place he was in; and he made a list of the people he'd met. He also sent a series of telegrams to friends and neighbors bearing the message "I AM STILL ALIVE." There are many other noteworthy works by On Kawara, but for today here is a postcard from May 14, 1972, letting Dr. Hulten know that On Kawara got up at 10:18 am.

Ansel Adams
One of the most renowned and influential artists of the 20th century, Ansel Adams (1902-1984) made thousands of awe-inspiring photographs that collectively create a rich visual portrait of the American landscape. A masterful photographer and dedicated environmentalist, Adams sought to imbue each of his black-and-white prints with the power and wonder he felt in the presence of nature. These 16 stamps feature some of Adams’s most famous images in his signature “straight photography” style, an approach defined by its precision and directness. Derry Noyes, an art director for USPS, designed the stamps. https://about.usps.com/newsroom/national-releases/2023/1130-usps-reveals-additional-stamps-for-2024.htm
