✨Today’s the day✨

Yesterday, our recitalists Shelén and Joseph arrived in New York with their collaborators Diego Fernandez (guitar), Amir Farid (piano), and Daniel Jimenez (percussion)! Here is a sneak peak into their last rehearsal before the recital. A part from being the guitarist for the recital, Diego was also the arranger for some of the pieces to allow for this ensemble to perform together.

A total of $80,000 was given in awards, announced by George and Nora London Foundation President
John Hauser. Of the singers (selected from 180 applicants) heard over three days of semi-final rounds,
ten were selected as finalists to perform at Merkin Hall. Of these, six were named winners of George
London Awards of $12,000 each. The remaining four singers were awarded George London
Encouragement Awards of $2,000 each. Each finalist performed one selection, and the winners were announced to the audience immediately
after the judges’ deliberations. This year’s judges were mezzo-soprano Susan Quittmeyer; tenor Dimitri
Pittas; bass James Morris; Matthew Horner, Senior Vice President of IMG Artists and London Foundation
board member; and Gayletha Nichols, soprano and former Executive Director of the Metropolitan Opera
National Council Auditions, who chaired the jury. John Arida was the competition’s pianist.

✨Alumni Spotlight✨This January, the Metropolitan Opera stage is featuring several George London Competition prize winners, reflecting the continued presence of our alumni at one of the world’s leading opera houses.

In the current run of Porgy and Bess we have prize winners Ryan Speedo Green (2014) as “Crown”, Norman Garrett (2014) as “Jim”, Darren Drone (2024) as “Undertaker”, Errin Duane Brooks (2017) as “Mingo”, and Benjamin Taylor (2018) singing the role of “Jake”. This past December our very own 2002 prize winner Latonia Moore graced the stage as “Serena” in the same production.

This current run of Madama Butterfly features prize winners Ailyn Pérez (2006) singing the role of “Cio-Cio San” and Robert Pomakov (2000) singing “Bonze”.

In the new production of I Puritani our 2010 competition prize winner Lisette Oropesa is performing the title role “Elvira Walton”. This is the first new staging of this opera in 50 years!

We are so proud of all of our alumni gracing the Metropolitan Opera stage!
