Today, in the town of Bra (Italy), Carlo Petrini passed away at the age of 76.

A visionary leader and public intellectual with a profound commitment to the common good, human relationships, and the natural world, Carlo Petrini founded Slow Food, the international Terra Madre gathering, and the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo.

Through these initiatives, he brought to life a global movement rooted in the values of good, clean, and fair food for all, connecting communities, farmers, food artisans, cooks, activists, and young people across the world.

“Those who sow utopia reap reality” – a phrase Carlo Petrini loved to say – encapsulates his life. He firmly believed that dreams and visions, when they are just, capable of inspiring collective participation, and pursued with conviction, are not impossible to achieve.

He combined the ability to dream with a deep sense of joy and collective purpose, paving concrete paths toward social change. His work was always rooted in collaboration with others, especially younger generations, and guided by passion, empathy and fraternity.
His energy, his determination, and his lifelong dedication to others will remain a guiding force for the entire Slow Food movement and for all those who shared his vision.

Last week we hosted our first Slow Chocolate event 🍫

Good, clean, and fair chocolate from tastes unlike anything we’ve had before: notes of red fruit and citrus singing alongside the deep, rich roast of dark chocolate. This complexity is thanks to the Maya-preserved Criollo variety of cacao, once at the brink of extinction. Tim, Beyond Good’s founder, has given the variety land to thrive. They’ve set up sleek, traceable bean-to-bar processing in Madagascar, with sustainable wages and model actions for the whole cacao chain.

So happy to partner with on this educational sampling experience at their laboratory in Brooklyn!

Savoring Saturday morning’s Slow Drift at , where we got to learn from founders Anu + Suyog and their talented team. Such a privilege to collaborate on Slow Food Coffee Coalition’s first event with ! ☕️

The Slow Food Coffee Coalition is an international, open, and collaborative network that brings together everyone involved in the coffee supply chain. The goal is to transform the coffee industry by adopting sustainable techniques, emphasizing regenerative and agroecological methods, promoting transparency, and celebrating the diverse cultures that are inherent in coffee farming.

In the Driftaway roastery, we watched and smelled the caramelizing of green coffee from smallholder farms in the highlands of Huabal, Peru. In their front bar, we embarked on a coffee omakase, which included a clear, lychee-fragrant brew and experimental coconut sour made from varieties of Colombia and India. Through it all, we got to celebrate the hard work of farmers via Driftaway’s approach to pricing transparency, which solves for costs that aren’t reflected in the stock market’s low commodity price for coffee.
This is what we love: good, clean, and fair.
