Varied Internship Program

Varied Internship Program Youth Learning while Earning ! The Varied Internship Program is a drug and alcohol prevention program for youths in our community from ages 14-18.

We are too good for drugs and too good for violence ! Director: Nettie Johnson- Burgess
The program is unique in that it involves parent`s participation, field trips, and youth from various cultural and economic backgrounds. Because of lack of jobs for young people and since there are no income eligibility requirements, it attracts youth between the ages of 13-21; youth who are high-risk, at risk

, as well as the general population. Their peers, police, and probation officers, legal aid, society, foster care, group homes, schools, and the community are referring youth.

Good day Guys! This is Sonia Chan back again to enlighten you all of what we have been doing at the VIP. At this time of the year we are having Strengthening Families workshops which involve both the interns and their parents. These workshops are held every Tuesdays from 6:30pm. Tuesday 1/6/15 we’ve discussed underage drinking. As many of you would hide to take a shot sometimes. Yes, you!! lol Think we don’t know what you’ve been doing? Think Again! Anyway, several teens said alcohol assists them to feel relief from all the stress but we at VIP say NO! NO! NO! To UNDERAGE DRINKING. However, I want to let you guys know there are alternatives to your situations. Simply by speaking someone who will encourage, motivate and inspire you to keep thinking positive. GIVE US YOUR FEEDBACK ON THIS TOPIC! Stay safe and keep on the right path. One Love.
Quote of the week!

Hot Topics at V.I.P.
The V.I.P.’s workshop on July 31st, 2014 was a very interesting one. This workshop’s topic was about risk taking and substance abuse prevention. Everyone learned a valuable lesson with the worksheets and activities on assessing risk. You should know what type of risk taker you are and the likely results against what you value. We continued the fun session with our Prevention through the Arts Segment, where our interns all performed. The steppers performed their routine about the V.I.P. The artist’s group drew two posters about drug abuse. The writers came up with poems and articles about their experiences on drug use and last but not least, the actors came up with a skit about a girl’s drink being tampered with. V.I.P is the place to be!

The Varied Internship Program’s second workshop on July 24th, 2014 was an exciting one! Mrs. Henriques and guest speaker, Mrs. Burke took over the show! We did so many interesting things such as acting out skits and performing with our very own talents. The talents were stepping, acting, drawing and writing. We all talked about scenarios and how we would react to them. Our hot topic today was making healthy decisions. Not to mention, we always have Pizza Thursdays! V.I.P. is the place to be, we’re teens and drug – free! - Susan Prashad

On Friday July 19, 2013 at our co-ed workshop Ms. Wade who is a parent of Malcolm Wade one of our interns came in as a guest speaker. She discussed her life as a Law Officer and some of the problems of being an officer. The group had a very deep discussion about the well known Trayvon Martin Case. As we discussed on Friday, Trayvon Martin was a 17 year old African American young man who was walking home from the store and a man by the name of George Zimmerman Shot and killed Trayvon. Zimmerman excuse was that he was defending himself. 17 months later, Zimmerman was taken to court and was found innocent and was set free. This caused rallies all over America for the Justice of Trayvon Martin. A few interns discussed how they believe that this is an example of racism. They also stated that if George Zimmerman was an African American Male he would have automatically been sentenced to death. Now, how do YOU feel about this case? Do you believe that Zimmerman should be set free or should’ve gotten the death penalty? I want to know wassup, so let me know! Later guys
