What happens when students lead the learning?

At this year’s final CEI PLLN, Student Leaders centered on voice, reflection, and action. Across two days, students presented their Positive Social Norms campaigns, practiced public speaking, shared feedback, and reflected on their CEI journey.

One of the most powerful moments was watching Cohort V students share advice and experiences with Cohort VI, reminding us that leadership grows stronger when students learn with and from one another.

We also want to shout out our Lead Agency Partners: The California Collaborative for Educational Excellence, the San Diego County Office of Education, and the University of San Diego School of Leadership and Education. We thank you for your dedication to our communities.

This is what community engagement looks like when youth voices lead the way.

When students are trusted as researchers and leaders, everything shifts.

Over the years, Eskolta has supported youth voices in many forms, including student-led inquiry and Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR).

Through this work, young people investigated their own experiences, asked hard questions, and shared insights that helped adults better understand what needed to change. That history continues to shape how we think about voice, agency, and school improvement.

What is one way young people in your community are already leading change?

Youth voice is strongest when it becomes shared leadership.

That belief has shaped Eskolta’s work over time, including through past efforts like the Growing Youth Leadership Academy (GYLA).

Through GYLA, we supported students and staff in building structures for shared leadership, from Internship Advisory Groups to Schoolwide Community Block meetings. These experiences continue to remind us that students thrive when they help shape school life alongside adults.

Where have you seen students move from feedback to co-leadership?

Youth Voice Week is a time to celebrate the power of young people to shape schools, communities, and systems for the better.

At Eskolta, we believe youth voice is not extra. It is essential. It is not a side conversation. It is part of how we design, learn, and improve alongside schools and communities.

When young people help name challenges, shape ideas, and guide decisions, schools become more responsive, more affirming, and more human.

This Youth Voice Week, we are celebrating the young people who continue to lead with insight, honesty, and vision.

How is your community making space for youth leadership?
