Oyster toadfish are a commonly caught species in Hudson River Park that inhabit burrows, structures and other hiding places found at the bottom of the River. Toadfish have several adaptations that make them effective ambush predators in this environment, including disruptive coloration, clearly visible in these photos. The blotches on their skin create high-contrast patterns that make them harder to perceive by creating false edges and breaking up their outline. Similar disruptive camouflage strategies are observed in terrestrial animals like leopards and tigers.

Disruptive camouflage is an excellent strategy in environments with a high variety of backgrounds. The bottom of the River features many different surfaces and colors including algae, shellfish, sediments and habitat structures like rocks and wood — the perfect backdrop for a toadfish to blend in!

Looks like it’s a letter from the Wetlab! Our Pier 40 Wetlab aquarium opens for the season tomorrow, and there are lots of local critters that can be found in our aquarium tanks.
This video features two of our current Wetlab residents, the blackfish and American eel, but there are many more to explore in-person.

Check out the Park’s newest visitor — a beaver! 🦫

Recently seen swimming around Gansevoort Peninsula, this beaver marks the first recorded sighting in our 400-acre Estuarine Sanctuary!

Though a rare sight in New York City, beavers are native to our local waterways and can be identified by their large body size and notable broad, flat tails.
