We're putting a spotlight on the Global Africa Gateway 2026 Summer Interns. Meet Samai Bellen Wilson.

Samai is a Master of International Affairs candidate at Columbia University (SIPA), specializing in Development and Governance. A UCLA alumna with a double major in History and Political Science, Samai focuses her work on a simple truth, that in order to fix modern economic and social challenges, we must first understand the historical and legal roots that created them.

Beyond her academic research into neocolonialism in Sub-Saharan Africa, Samai has worked on the front lines of the legal sector, advocating for vulnerable communities. By bridging the gap between historical context and modern socio-economic policy, she aims to design more equitable systems that drive long-term global change.

This summer, Samai is working in Cairo, Egypt with the International Organization for Migration, the leading intergovernmental organization committed to the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits migrants and society.

Africa Day 2026 began with blustery winds sweeping across our plaza, but not even the weather could dampen the spirit of the celebration.

From local vendors and cultural experiences to live music, dancing, and community connection, every corner of The Africa Center was alive with the richness and diversity of the continent.

We were honored to welcome Mayor Mamdani, whose remarks underscored the importance of Africa Day and the vibrant African diaspora communities that help shape our city.
