Walt Whitman, considered one of the most influential American poets and one of the most significant figures of the 19th century, is often called the “father of free verse” due to his style of writing. He is famous for his self-published poetry collection, "Leaves of Grass". Born on Long Island in 1855, Whitman grew up in Brooklyn.

During the Civil War, he worked in Washington, DC, where he visited wounded soldiers. Those experiences informed the poetry in his later publication, "Drum-Taps", which includes his elegy for President Abraham Lincoln, “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d.” As his health declined, Whitman moved to Camden, New Jersey, where he eventually died at age 72. A public funeral was held with an attendance of over 1,000. His legacy lives on to this day, inspiring artists around the world.

Musica Sacra concludes its 25-26 season with the world premiere of Wayne Oquin’s “On the Words of Walt Whitman” for soloists, chorus and chamber orchestra, with Susanna Phillips and John Moore. Oquin’s cantata spans the totality of Walt Whitman’s poetry - from the iconic “Song of Myself” to lesser-known gems written later in the poet’s life.

Experience Wayne Oquin’s homage to Walt Whitman. Get tickets today!
