Congratulations are in order! CCCA would like to celebrate two of our long term collaborators Irene Gandy and Woodie King Jr. who were chosen to be the recipients of the 2020 Tony Honors for Excellence in Theatre. Awarded to individuals and organizations that have demonstrated extraordinary achievement in theatre, but are not eligible to receive any of the other established Tony Award categories. Irene is the only Black female press agent member of the Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers. She has worked on an extensive and impressive roster of theater productions, including “The Wiz,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Lena Horne: The Lady and her Music,” and many more. She is no stranger to awards either, having received multiple throughout her career for her impact on black and q***r communities, as well as the theater community as a whole. She currently sits on the board here at CCCA, as well as Harlem Week and New Heritage Theater.
Woodie, founder of the New Federal Theater, has spent his career working to provide a space for artists and women of color in the world of theater. Aiming to integrate this group into the vast world of American theater. NFT has produced a series of award winning plays, such as “For Colored Girls Who Considered Su***de When the Rainbow Was Enuf,” “Black Girl,” and “The Taking of Miss Janie.” NFT is a mecca for young performers of color to find solace in, and has supported the early careers of many of today’s household names. From the late Chadwick Boseman, Debbie Allen, and Morgan Freeman, to Phylicia Rashad, Denzel Washington, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Samuel L. Jackson, Issa Rae, and many more. NFT has been an incubator for young playwrights as well, focusing on producing new works and providing a space for new faces.
