Congratulations are in order! CCCA would like to celebrate two of our long term collaborators Irene Gandy and Woodie King Jr. who were chosen to be the recipients of the 2020 Tony Honors for Excellence in Theatre. Awarded to individuals and organizations that have demonstrated extraordinary achievement in theatre, but are not eligible to receive any of the other established Tony Award categories. Irene is the only Black female press agent member of the Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers. She has worked on an extensive and impressive roster of theater productions, including “The Wiz,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Lena Horne: The Lady and her Music,” and many more. In honor of American Artist Appreciation Month, City College Center for the Arts would like to celebrate by highlighting some of Harlem’s great lineage of inspiring artists. This week we would like to celebrate Zora Neale Hurston, a revolutionary writer, filmmaker, and anthropologist. Hurston was born in Notasulga, Alabama in 1891 to John and Lucy Ann Hurston. She was the fifth of eight children, and the granddaughter of formerly enslaved people. She and her family moved to Eatonville, Florida when she was three years old, one of the first all black towns in the United States; Eatonville was the setting in which many of Hurston’s stories took place.
She went on to graduate high school and attended Howard University as her undergrad, where she was one of the first initiates of the schools Zeta Phi Beta sorority chapter. Hurston also became a co-founder of the school's newspaper, The Hilltop. She graduated from Howard with her Associate’s degree before attending Barnard College at Columbia University, where she was the sole black student, upon being offered a scholarship. In her time studying at Barnard, she conducted ethnographic research alongside Franz Boas, who is considered to be the “Father of anthropology.” After graduating she would continue her graduate studies at Columbia, furthering her research with Boas. During this time Hurston was living in Harlem, having had some of her earlier written works published through short story and playwriting contests. She was a pillar in the community, her home a beacon of social gathering and black joy.
