Doctors of the World USA

Doctors of the World USA Real impact isn't achieved through convenient activism. We seek out and defend the inconveniently unhealthy and target underlying medical issues.
(943)

Doctors of the World USA is a global health and humanitarian organization that delivers medical care—and defends the right to it—where health systems are strained, collapsing, or out of reach. We answer the crisis from within the crisis, seek out marginalized populations, and build long-term, sustainable healthcare infrastructures in places society would prefer to ignore. Doctors of the World is a

n international human rights organization providing emergency and long-term medical care to vulnerable people. When the crisis is over and the cameras leave, we stay for as long as it takes to build better medical infrastructures. We don’t drop in for quick fixes—we empower local communities and build sustainable, robust healthcare infrastructures, both here in the US and abroad. We believe that access to consistent, quality medical care isn’t a privilege but a human right.

Somalia is facing one of the worst hunger crises in years—and it's not getting the attention it deserves.

6.5 million people, one in three Somalis, are facing severe hunger. Years of failed rains have destroyed crops and killed livestock. Now, conflict in the Middle East is making things worse—driving up fuel prices and disrupting the shipping routes that bring in life-saving therapeutic food.

Nearly half a million children under 5 are facing severe acute malnutrition. More than 500 health and nutrition facilities across Somalia have already closed because the funding isn't there.
The UN has asked for $852 million to prevent famine. Only 14% has come in.

Somalia must not be forgotten.

49 people died of thirst in the Sahara Desert last week. They were migrant workers returning from a gold mining site when their truck broke down in the middle of the Ténéré Desert. No water. No signal. Only two survived.

This is the reality of a route thousands travel every year. Doctors of the World has been working in this region—and speaking out—because this cannot keep happening.

A new outbreak is spreading in eastern DRC, with hundreds of suspected cases and reported deaths already raising alarm.

The World Health Organization has declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, its second-highest alert level.

In North Kivu and South Kivu, our teams are on the ground—providing care, tracing contacts, and working urgently to contain the spread.

Even in the face of Ebola, care continues. So does hope. Stand with us.

: Women and Children Plagued by Malnutrition.

Restrictions imposed by Israeli authorities on entry into the occupied Palestinian territory are plunging the population of Gaza into food insecurity. Women and children are the hardest hit by this catastrophic situation.

Our health centers on the ground are identifying and treating cases of malnutrition among pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as among children.

Dr. Israa Saleh worked in these clinics until October 2025. Her valuable sheds light on the situation on the ground.

We don’t talk about periods—and that silence comes at a cost.

For thousands of women and girls in , managing menstruation each month means navigating taboos, limited resources, and a lack of reliable information.

This silence is more than discomfort. It is a real barrier to health, education, and autonomy.

But when we break the silence, change becomes possible.

In Gaza, the food situation is alarming.

Today:

🔴 77% of the population is facing food insecurity
🔴 Cases of acute malnutrition are rising sharply, particularly among children and pregnant and breastfeeding women
🔴 Prices are skyrocketing, and access to essential goods is becoming unaffordable for a large portion of the population

Yet malnutrition is entirely preventable, as it is caused solely by the restrictions imposed by the Israeli military on the entry of goods into the Gaza Strip.

In light of this situation, Doctors of the World calls on the international community to take action to allow for the massive, continuous, and unimpeded entry of humanitarian aid.

“I feel like I’m helping them repair, in part, the harm caused by the violence they have suffered.” — Marie, midwife in Konni, Niger

At our one‑stop center in Konni, Marie provides free, confidential care to survivors of gender‑based violence — medical exams, emergency ultrasounds, and referrals to legal and psychosocial support.

In 2024, Doctors of the World provided over 142,000 consultations across Niger, and the Konni center supported 97 survivors of GBV. Each number represents someone who found care when it mattered.

But with recent aid cuts, more than 3 million women and girls have already lost access to essential GBV services. Programs like Marie’s are now at risk.

Still, she shows up every day — determined to protect and support the women and girls in her community.

🔴 Amid an already severe humanitarian crisis, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is now facing an Ebola outbreak.

Active in the northeast of the country since 2025, providing access to healthcare for populations affected by armed conflict, is adapting: strict health protocols, isolation of suspected cases, and community outreach.

In northeastern , in Borno State, malnutrition affects thousands of children.

In , our teams work every day to screen and treat them, as well as to guide and support their families.

Our goal: to quickly identify cases of malnutrition and take action as soon as possible.

Each year, 23,000 children benefit from our nutritional services provided at 8 health facilities in Nigeria.
