ICYMI: broken windows policing is still happening in NYC, no matter what NYPD Commissioner Tisch claims. We saw it in practice last week, while observing arraignments in courts -- disproportionately targeting Black, Latine, Brown and low-income NYers. Out of more than 370 arraignments we saw in 4 days, 57% of them were for misdemeanor charges, and 93% targeted people of color.

“ What New Yorkers saw in courtrooms this week was not a new approach to public safety that Mayor Mamdani promised during his campaign,” JC Organizer Samy Feliz said. "It is not focusing on police resources on serious crime. It is the same aggressive, racially discriminatory enforcement of low-level offenses that we saw under Eric Adams.”

This week, dozens of New Yorkers honored the legacy of Black Freedom Fighters by serving as eyes and ears in the court rooms where New Yorkers arrested by the NYPD are funneled into the criminal legal system. What we saw this week made clear that broken windows policing is still happening in this city and it is causing immeasurable harm to Black, Latine, and working class New Yorkers. Mayor Mamdani was elected on a promise of making New York a livable city for all. Ending the criminalization of poverty, mental health, substance use, and homelessness is not separate from that promise - it’s essential to it, and we stand ready to work with his administration to realize a new vision of community safety.

Help us keep Mohamed Bah's legacy alive!

Founded by Hawa Bah - a mother seeking to honor her son by turning grief into purpose - the Mohamed Bah Legacy Project is cross-continental organization serving communities in both New York, USA, and Guinea, West Africa.

was killed in his own home by NYPD officers in 2012, after his mother called 911 for an ambulance and cops arrived first. Since that time, Mrs. Bah has devoted her life to ending police violence and increasing well-being for her multi-national community.

Mohamed once said, "Mom, America is a great country, but everyone needs help." Those words guide everything the Legacy Project does.

Our programs provide job placement, mental health resources, food and clothing assistance to new immigrants in New York and medicines, supplies, and clean water in Mohamed’s homeland: we have already built 5 wells in West African villages. We also bridge the Guinean diaspora through cultural exchange trips.

We are currently seeking to raise $20,000 for a project to bring donated medical equipment from New York to Guinea.

Your donation helps us keep building bridges, creating hope, and carrying forward the legacy of a son whose spirit continues to inspire change.

🔴 LIVE on IG Friday 7/24 at 1pm: join us for a crucial conversation with .Williams, Victor Dempsey (brother of ), and Utsho Rozario (brother of ) about the two brothers’ long-delayed fights for justice ✊

July 4 marked 10 years since Delrawn's murder. It also marked what should have been Win's 22nd birthday. But both families are still fighting for discipline trials while the NYPD continues to delay – almost six years since Officer Wayne Isaacs was charged for killing Delrawn, and over 10 months since Officers Salvatore Alongi and Matthew Cianfrocco were charged for killing Win.

There is NO need for these delays. No families should have to fight this hard, while grieving, for the bare minimum of accountability.

Tune into our live or Advocate on 7/24 at 1pm to hear directly from Victor & Utsho and take action in solidarity with their families!
