Looking back on Nagma’s Statement at the 2026 ECOSOC Youth Forum 🇺🇳

On April 14th, Nagma Shrestha spoke during the opening by conversation of the 2026 ECOSOC Youth Forum. Throughout the discussion, she highlighted multiple Youth and Students for Peace’s (YSP) programs that have encouraged youth-led advocacy globally.

Nagma highlights the effective outcomes of Youth and Students for Peace’s peace designer workshops, especially in the historically divided city of Mitrovica, Kosovo. She details how youth took matters into their own hands. Through grassroots efforts, youth collaborated to bridge divides, build trust, and achieve authentic change. 🙏

Their efforts led to the connection of South Mitrovica, North Mitrovica, and Prisavo in the 2025 Balkan International Youth Summit for Peace. Youth efforts ultimately led to the Peace Road March across the Iber Bridge, which became a long term symbol of unity. The efforts of Youth in the Balkans through workshops and local efforts demonstrate how their efforts are not only impactful, but lasting and inspirational. 🕊️

In the Balkans and beyond, the efforts of youth continue to inspire and transform. Let us continue to collaborate and empower youth as they work to make change for the better. 🤝

📚Session 2 of Peace Designer in the Bronx👩‍🏫

On May 12th, IAYSP USA returned to the Bronx for Session 2 of Peace Designer! 🔥

Students came back with real observations from scouting their environment, sharing what works, what doesn’t, and what could be better. From there, they were introduced to a simple framework for making change, the same way athletes study the game to improve their performance 🏀 Understand the problem, find the real issue, take action, and keep adjusting.

The session ended with each group choosing ONE issue they care about and locking it in as the focus for their Peace Project. The work is getting real 💪 Stay tuned as these young Peace Designers start digging into the “why” behind the problems they want to solve 🌎

Snapshots of UNEP Commencement of World Environment Day 2026 📸🌱

IAYSP attended the Commencement of World Environment Day 2026, where we learned from a diverse group of representatives, speakers, and advocates about their commitments to building a more sustainable future. 🌱

Representatives from various countries and organizations spoke on a range of topics related to the environment and our shared future. They addressed challenges such as environmental awareness, advocacy, and youth involvement, while committing to continued progress in these areas.

Youth representatives also played an active role in the commencement, emphasizing that youth involvement is essential for meaningful change. By supporting greater youth participation in environmental discussions, the impact of environmental protection efforts can be significantly strengthened. 👏

Young people and leaders from around the world are working together to protect our common home. We should continue to learn from their example as we strive to build a healthier, more sustainable environment for all. 🌏

UNEP World Environment Day 🌱💧

This past Friday, voices from around the globe came together to celebrate the Commencement of World Environment Day 2026 with one goal: protecting our planet!

Throughout the conference, speakers took on both long-standing and emerging environmental challenges. From tackling pollution and rising greenhouse gas emissions to addressing newer concerns like the environmental impact of AI and its water consumption, conversations covered all parts of today’s environment. Representatives reaffirmed their commitments and introduced innovative initiatives aimed at building a more sustainable and resilient future for all. 🙏
What truly stood out, however, was the energy and leadership of youth voices.

Youth representatives had the honor of both opening and closing the conference, setting the tone with passion. They reminded everyone in the room that young people are both the future of climate action and active leaders shaping it right now. Their messages highlighted the importance of inclusion, collaboration, and fresh perspectives when it comes to solving global environmental challenges.🍃

As we move forward, let’s continue to support, empower, and uplift youth voices. By working together we can build a future that is more sustainable and inclusive! The future is green and youth are leading the way. 🌍

📚 Session 1 of Peace Designer in the Bronx 👩‍🏫

On April 23rd, IAYSP USA had the opportunity to host the first Peace Designer session at a local high school in the Bronx. Peace Designer education is part of a larger campaign to engage high school students and youth communities in the northeast region to understand the importance of global citizenry and civic engagement. 🌎💡

In Session 1, John introduced IAYSP USA and Peace Designer, which empowers youth to create their own peace projects and make a positive impact in their communities. The concept of positive peace was emphasized, and how we all play a role in initiating change 🕊️ He explained the 3 levels of peace: 1) Peace within ourselves, 2) Peace with others, 3) Peace with our environment and had students reflect on their personal experiences with these points 💭 The session ended with a mission for everyone to scout their environment and look for issues around them that needs a solution, and to brainstorm an idea to improve it 🧠🤔

✨CSW70 Parallel Event Highlights: Peace Education as the Missing Pillar 📚🕊️

On March 19th, YSP and partnering organizations UPF, WFWP, and GNWP hosted a CSW Parallel Event “Peace Education as the Missing Pillar - Preventing Harassment and Securing Justice for Women and Girls” at the Church Center of UN 📑

The central outcome of the discussion with our experienced speakers was the recognition of peace education as a critical and complementary pillar in advancing justice. It was agreed upon that uneven implementation and institutional breakdown is often the case of limitations in legal frameworks for protecting women and girls. We discussed how Women, Peace, and Security and Peace and Security Agendas can also be actively applied centered around youth voices.

While peace education is crucial for advancing justice for women and girls, let us also strive for stronger collaboration across global and local efforts so we can continuously invest towards prevention and accountability 🙏
