I have some good news to share. We heard from the vet and received an encouraging update on Cleo. The blood test she had done last week actually showed a slight improvement in her kidney function. Everything else came back within normal limits. She will have her heart checked again in September, along with another blood and urine test. The medication and prescribed diet have been effective.

It was a beautiful and breezy afternoon, perfect for spending time with Lady and W***y while their foster mom was away. We met our friend at Heckscher Park in Huntington and met many dog lovers who were also enjoying the nice weather. It’s always a fun day when you're out with these wonderful dogs. They love spending time together and meeting new people.

🐾 Double the Fun, Twice the Love: Meet W***y & Lady!
Looking for an instant adventure squad? Meet W***y and Lady, a playful, affectionate, and deeply bonded pair of medium-sized bully mixes (both under 4 years old) who are ready to find their forever home together. These two are the ultimate package deal—full of life, fiercely loyal, and completely devoted to one another.
Get to Know the Dynamic Duo:
• The Perfect Balance: W***y is a stocky, sensitive boy who looks to his partner for confidence. Lady is a bit taller, slender, and beautifully secure.
• Tug-of-War Champions: Their favorite pastime is playing together! Lady usually wins tug-of-war thanks to her height, but W***y loves the challenge. He is a total goofball who will playfully tease Lady to get a game started.
• World-Class Cuddlers: When playtime is over, their affectionate sides shine. They are incredibly loving and want nothing more than to shower their humans with affection.

Our Ideal Forever Home:
Because their dedicated foster mom travels frequently and works long hours at times, W***y and Lady haven't had much formal training yet. They are very active and enthusiastic. They will need an adopter who is excited to teach them basic manners and help them channel their great energy. Like all fun-loving athletes, they sometimes need a designated "time out" or structured rest time in a crate or quiet room to help them power down after a big play session.

Bonus: You aren't doing this alone! Our rescue maintains lifelong communication with our adopters. We love W***y and Lady, and we will always be available to answer questions and assist you with anything you need throughout their lives. We offer a Foster-to-Adopt program to help you transition them into your home smoothly. Ready to double your love and join our rescue family?

Hope was rescued in February 2018 by an independent rescuer from the South Bronx. Although her intentions were good, she lived on the fourth floor of a building without an elevator, which made it difficult for Hope to climb the stairs. We were asked to help. We had an adoption event scheduled and offered to bring Hope with us. Meanwhile, our friend April, who lived in an apartment building with an elevator, planned to volunteer at the adoption event and wanted to meet Hope to see if fostering her was a viable option. After spending the afternoon with Hope, April was eager to begin fostering her. We officially took Hope into our care and brought her to April’s apt. the following evening. We all worked together to share Hope’s rescue story in hopes of finding her a perfect home – and we did! After many phone calls and emails, we knew that Hope would live the rest of her life with her new mom, Sara! In August, Zulma and I drove Hope to her foster-to-adopt home. A month later, Zulma, April, and I visited Hope to finalize her adoption. She was thrilled to see her old friends and eager to show off her new mom and home. It was a wonderful reunion.

However, we were heartbroken to receive sad news about Hope just six months after her adoption. After the holidays, she began to slow down, and by late February, she became very ill and had to be rushed to the animal hospital by ambulance. The veterinarian discovered that Hope had cancer in her heart and spleen. Unfortunately, the most humane option was to euthanize her. The news saddened us deeply, but we were grateful that Hope received the best care and was surrounded by loving people at the end of her life. We will always remember this sweet, gentle dog.

In the fall of 2012, a maintenance worker in the building where I worked, whom I had previously helped with cats, asked if I could take in a litter of five kittens. At that time, we didn't have room for additional rescues. The next day, the man, whose name was Fernando, came to my office with a box of kittens. He was extremely frustrated and angry and threatened to put the kittens in the parking garage or on the street if I couldn't take them. That afternoon, I went home with five kittens, and they lived out their lives with us. Lucas, who was the most affectionate and needy of the group, was the closest to us. He loved every rescue pet that came into our home and felt the need to comfort them if they were nervous or unwell. He especially enjoyed snuggling up against pets after they were bathed, almost as if he were helping them not to feel nervous. Lucas struggled with kidney disease, and after multiple tests just a few weeks ago, it was confirmed that he was in kidney failure. We made him comfortable until we saw the signs that it was time to say our goodbyes. Lucas was a wonderful pet and will be greatly missed.

I am sharing some photos and quotes that Dennis had of Buster (then named Courage) while he was in foster care. He truly loved Courage, and it made him very happy to know that he had saved a life.

I hesitated to share this at first, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized how quickly life can change. Ironically, Buster, also known as Courage, was fostered by brothers Dennis and James when we desperately needed a foster home to save him from being euthanized. Despite having many rescue dogs of their own to care for, they were incredibly kind and willing to help us out. This meant a lot to us.
Dennis and James were also the guardians of these senior dogs I previously posted about, who lost their home and family. Buster lived with his foster dads, Duchess and Petrie, for several months. Now, however, Buster is reunited with his foster dads, and the girls are homeless. It is truly sad to see how quickly circumstances can change.
Knowing that these brothers lost their lives at such a young age is just heartbreaking. Their mother passed away when they were very young, but they supported each other through the hardship. They had a strong affection for animals and were always willing to offer their assistance. We didn’t know them well, only through acquaintances, but when you share a love for something as we did for animals, you can’t help but form a friendship or a special connection. We feel very sad for these dogs who desperately need a place to call home before they have to leave their current home. The matter is urgent because the caretaker needs to vacate the home very soon. As you can imagine, the dogs are sad and need someone special who can step in to help. We do not have the accommodations or funds to take these dogs into rescue at this time.
