Achieving Leadership’s Purpose (ALP) Preparing Our Youth For Leadership

Founded in 1968, incorporated in 2006, ALP provides civic leadership training skills to African-Diasporan high school students. Alumni of the experience typically follow career paths in education, government, domestic and international community affairs, social justice, and/or philanthropy. Our Theory of Change is that we can transform poor, under-resourced urban communities into communities of gr

eater equity and empowerment by developing their youth and positioning them for leadership roles in the social sector. We take a cohort of dynamic African-Diasporan high school juniors and seniors and put them through a 12-24 month intensive civic leadership training model that teaches them to critically analyze contemporary social and economic issues facing their communities. Our model includes over 300 annual hours of training delivered through classroom lectures, book discussions, theme-based retreats, and community engagement projects. Furthermore, they are placed in opportunities to practice learned leadership techniques and are assigned a leadership advisor (who is also an alumnus/a) to guide their career objectives.
