Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company

Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company “With an eye for beauty and an exacting attention to detail, Daniel Gwirtzman takes good care of his audience and his performers.

Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company was “founded upon a philosophy that dance should celebrate human achievement through a combination of discipline and unbound optimism.” The New York Sun (about the Company’s 10th Anniversary season) His ideal of beauty is kind to the body: His choreography celebrates the long lines and musculature of dancers’ bodies. The dancers are flawless and picture perfect too.

” ---Show Business

“Mr. Gwirtzman does know that in dance less can be more. And that’s a good thing for any choreographer to know. He can evoke strong feelings with a few gestures.”
---The New York Times

Memorial Day invites us to pause and to hold space for remembrance — of those who served, of those we’ve lost, and of communities that keep finding ways to come together. Dance has always been one of those ways: a reminder that we are here, that being here matters, and that we can focus on what we’re building with the time we have. This is certainly what happened this past week as DGDC put in a robust rehearsal week, creating art, cementing community, taking care of each other. Gathering together is an act of joy and affirmation. We’re grateful to continue making and sharing this work with you. JOIN US next month when DGDC hosts IN THE STUDIO — an up-close, unfiltered look at the creative process behind our newest works. New York City Center Studios June 25 and 26. Free admission. Limited seats. Reserve your spot. Link in bio.

Gorgeous portrait of Carmen de Lavallade painted by Geoffrey Holder in 1976 from last year’s amazing Edges of Ailey exhibit at The Whitney. Greatness never leaves. Both of their legacies will continue to inspire.

DECEMBER FLASHBACK. Seventeen years ago this December, in 2008, there was another snowfall in the City, only this one was a true blizzard. It was unclear whether subways would be running and there would be an opening. In the end the show went on, the evening-length dance Timebomb premiered with a six-performance run at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York and an all-star cast: Stacy Wiley (Martorana), Oren Barnoy, Jamie Scott, and the choreographer. This brief film, shot and edited by filmmaker Kamil Dobrowolski promoted the 2008 premiere. Enjoy this glimpse into the rehearsal process at the former Merce Cunningham Studio in Manhattan’s West Village as the Company folded Oren into a cast that had previously included dancers Cary McWilliam and Jonathan Emanuell Alsberry. Timebomb previewed at New York City Center during the Company’s month-long Dance In The Studio series. Compelling footage from these performances are featured at the end of this Trailer, with Cary completing the quartet.

CRITICAL PRAISE IN THE NEW YORKER. Combining Gwirtzman's signature choreographic blend of pedestrianism and virtuosity, Timebomb meditates on the unpredictability of life and the impact of the unexpected. Brian Seibert writing in The New Yorker: “Gradually building up from a solo into a quartet,Timebomb doesn't explode all at once. Instead, eyeing each other warily as they work in the round, negotiating handholds and counterbalances in fraught encounters, the dancers suggest participants in the kind of complex schoolyard game that can turn brutal in an instant. A drum-heavy score helps sustain the tension, but it's mostly Gwirtzman's choreographic craft and invention-setting the free swing of limbs and bodies against forces of suspension and hesitation-that keep the work taut and surprising.”
