Addressing the EU Political & Security Committee in , SRSG Pramila Patten warned that conflict-related sexual violence is not an inevitable consequence of war. It is preventable, punishable, and demands accountability.
Nearly 10,000 UN-verified cases were recorded in 2025 alone, including almost 3,000 children. Women and girls represented around 90% of victims.
As violence rises, we must stand with survivors, amplify their voices, and ensure justice is not a privilege but a right. The 🇪🇺 European Union remains an indispensable partner in advancing accountability and survivor-centered action.

Survivors are agents of change and architects of peace. What matters is not the legacy of what we have built, but whether it will stand the test of time.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Study on Violence against Children, the landmark report that affirmed that NO VIOLENCE against children is justifiable and that all violence against children is preventable.

Children affected by conflict face heightened risks of conflict-related sexual violence, trafficking, and exploitation. As we mark this milestone, we reaffirm our commitment to preventing these crimes, supporting survivors, and ensuring that every child can grow up free from violence.

A world in crisis demands more than concern. It demands action.

At the Ministerial-Level Side Event of the Focal Points Network, SRSG Pramila Patten underscored the urgent need to protect hard-won gains for women and girls affected by conflict. As cases of conflict-related sexual violence rise and women continue to be excluded from peace processes, the call is clear: invest in survivors, strengthen accountability, and ensure women’s meaningful participation in peace and security efforts.

Women’s leadership, participation and protection are not peripheral concerns. They are essential to sustainable peace.
