James Peter survived conflict‑related sexual violence in Ituri Province, . In 1998, armed men entered his family home during escalating violence. His parents were killed. His sisters were r***d and later died from their injuries. He survived only because he was not there.

While fleeing with his brothers in search of safety, they were captured by an armed group, beaten, humiliated, and sexually violated as punishment for refusing to join. The violence followed them across borders, leaving lasting physical, psychological, and economic scars.

For him, justice has never meant only a courtroom. It has meant dignity, medical care, protection, and the hope of returning home without fear. Like many survivors, he lived through a conflict marked by impunity and silence. By sharing his testimony, he challenges the silence around sexual violence against men - and calls for perpetrators to be held accountable, so others do not endure what he did.

This is why our Office fights. We document conflict‑related sexual violence against women, men, girls, and boys so these crimes cannot be erased or denied. Through survivor‑centered advocacy, we push for accountability, access to services, and justice that reflects the full harm of war.

She was only 14 when a trusted relative lured her from her home in , handed her over to a local Taliban commander, and trapped her in a cycle of r**e, coercion, and forced marriage. Instead of protection, she was criminalized - treated as an offender rather than a survivor, and pushed into a justice system that punished her for the violence committed against her. Her story is not an anomaly; it is the consequence of impunity, discriminatory laws, and the weaponization of shame.

This is why we do what we do. We work to document violations, advocate for survivor‑centered justice, support national authorities, and push for legal and institutional reforms so that survivors are protected - not punished - and accountability becomes the norm, not the exception.

While young people face unprecedented challenges, we also see a generation that is innovating, adapting, and leading change. Young people are also critical partners in efforts to prevent and respond to conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV), helping to raise awareness, challenge stigma, support survivors, and strengthen accountability for these crimes. Their voices, leadership, and advocacy are essential to ensuring that CRSV is not overlooked and that affected communities are heard.

We must continue investing in young people and creating the conditions for them to succeed. By empowering youth as agents of change, we can build more inclusive, peaceful, and resilient societies while advancing efforts to end CRSV and support survivors.
