On June 29th, Ethiopian champion Almaz Ayana won the Ethiopian Olympic Trail race in the Netherlands. She had the best time in the 10,000m race in history. She is now eighth on the world-all-time list, and hopes to continue her Olympic career.

During a recent press conference on June 23rd President Uhuru Kenyatta and Prime Minister of Ethiopia Hailemariam Desalegn announced that they sealed the deal with Kenya and South Sudan for the building of a brand new oil pipeline from Lamu Port. This project will produce an immense amount of opportunities for trade and investments for both countries, and will create market access for companies in the two states.

UNICEF recently had the largest global purchase of therapeutic food to help children in Ethiopia in their history. With the support of their donors UNICEF was able to supply 542,631 cartons of ready to use food to victims of the El Nino driven drought. UNICEF has now opened a new warehouse in the Gerji area of Addis Ababa to help manage the large amount of supplies.

Athene the most famous record-breaking professional gamer started gamingforgood.net, which is an online platform that raises money for philanthropic charities. Athene and his crew recently traveled to Ethiopia to raise awareness and funds for Save the Children’s response to the current drought crisis. After his trip Athene decided to use his website to raise more funding for Save the Children. Donations are rewarded with points for whatever video game the individual prefers. The Ethiopian government plans to start generating electricity from its newest hydropower plant, Gibe III, this year as long as rain is sufficient and fills the dam. The Gibe III will generate electricity for 94% of the country. Another benefit of this hydropower plant is that it will help to regulate flooding in the South Omo region of Ethiopia.

Substantial flooding has come to Ethiopia during a time that the country is struggling with the worst drought they have seen in 30 years. The drought in Ethiopia has left 10 million people in need of urgent relief. Due to the flood that recently took place another 200,000 Ethiopian Citizens have had to leave their homes, and have gone without shelter. Luckily the United Kingdom is supporting the flood response in Ethiopia, and is helping to provide shelter to more than 150,000 people during this crisis.
