Actor, activist, and Zen priest Peter Coyote joins the Peacemakers Podcast for a direct and courageous exploration of this political moment. Drawing from decades of spiritual practice and civic engagement, he traces the arc from the aspirations of the 1960s to the strategic realities shaping today’s political and economic systems.
This is not a conversation about withdrawing from the world. It is about entering it fully. About listening without collapsing into judgment. About standing in uncertainty without losing clarity.
The Three Tenets are not abstract teachings. They are living tools for these times.

Listen now.
How do we practice in the middle of history as it unfolds?

Each day offers us a blank canvas to shape who we are, not in isolation, but through our actions in the world. Personal transformation is inseparable from the choices we make each day even in small gestures - as a way of cultivating presence, compassion, and justice.

For those involved in social entrepreneurship or community service, this principle is especially powerful: every decision, every effort to help others, every act of integrity is a reflection of who we are becoming.

We are not passively shaped by circumstance; we actively create our character through service, courage, and mindfulness.

Daily practice is not only about meditation on the cushion but about how we inhabit the world - thoughtfully, lovingly, and with responsibility.

Beyond the walls are not “others.”
They are people — carrying harm, trauma, resilience, and worth.
Prison outreach begins with presence, not judgment.
We bear witness.
We stay.
We remember humanity.
When compassion enters, isolation loosens.
Walk this path of dignity.

What happens when we slow down enough to truly see?
Street Retreats place participants on the streets for a week —
finding food, shelter, and bathrooms as so many must do every day.
This is not role-play.
It is deep witnessing.
Through vulnerability and presence, we encounter our shared humanity — and ourselves.

Pain, mistakes, and challenges can feel endless. These experiences are teachers, not punishments.

Learn to meet life fully - to sit with suffering, witness injustice, and engage honestly with what arises.

By observing rather than resisting, we uncover the lessons embedded in every difficult moment.

Every discomfort, every fear, every setback contains the seeds of understanding, compassion, and wisdom.

To ignore them is to miss the opportunity to awaken.

Gender equality is not an idea.
It is daily practice.
It means honoring safety, dignity, and agency for all.
We question assumptions.
We center lived experience.
We change systems that cause harm.
When all voices matter, communities thrive.
Awakening happens together.

We invite you to join an important and heartfelt conversation on caregiving, compassion, and presence.
Roy Remer, Executive Director of the Zen Caregiving Project, will guide an interactive presentation exploring a model of care rooted in mindfulness and connection. Since 1986, this work has supported both caregivers and those nearing the end of life, offering tools to meet suffering with clarity and compassion.
This is an opportunity to deepen how we show up for others—and ourselves—in moments that matter most.

Compassion is more than an emotion - it is a powerful force that sustains life itself. The choices we make to act with kindness, empathy, and understanding are what allow communities and societies to thrive.

We recognize that survival isn't just about personal gain or security - it's about actively contributing to a world where humanity flourishes.

By cultivating compassion in our daily lives, we strengthen our capacity to respond to challenges with care and insight.

Recognizing our shared humanity, when we choose kindness over indifference, our actions ripple outward, creating tangible change and inspiring others to do the same.

“Yeah, well, you know, that’s just like, your opinion, man…”
In this rich and wide-open conversation, Jeff Bridges brings his unmistakable warmth and candor to the subject we’re all living into: aging.
Reflecting on his role in The Old Man, his years of friendship and practice with Bernie Glassman, and his own experience of illness and vulnerability, Jeff speaks about surrender—not as defeat, but as a doorway.
Together with Eve Marko, the conversation moves through:
Growing older without losing curiosity.
Meeting illness with honesty and heart.
Letting creativity evolve rather than fade.
Living inside uncertainty without needing control.
“The Dude abides” — but in this episode, the abiding isn’t ironic. It’s tender. It’s awake. It’s deeply human.
This is not a talk about decline. It’s about ripening.
Not about certainty. About intimacy with not knowing.
If aging has started whispering in your ear—or knocking loudly—this episode offers companionship for the road.
Take it easy. Pour something warm (or cold). Settle in.
The Tao of growing older is less about answers and more about presence.

Resistance is a universal habit. When life does not meet our expectations, the mind rebels, judgment arises, and suffering grows. Kornfield points to self-acceptance as the antidote.

Spiritual life is not about controlling experience or reaching perfection. It is about learning to meet reality with clarity, patience, and compassion - starting with ourselves.

In Bearing Witness retreats, this practice is central. We see suffering and difficulty without turning away or reacting. We learn that true peace arises not from changing the world, but from changing our relationship with it.

There is no single way to know the sacred.
Interfaith work begins when we set aside being right.
We listen with care.
We respect each path.
We meet one another without erasing difference.
In shared service, we discover what connects us.
Each act of service becomes a bridge.
