Nathan Cummings Foundation (NCF) was proud to support ’s Impact Conference last week in New York City. NCF’s President & CEO, Rey Ramsey, spoke about our foundation’s journey to 100% mission-aligned investing, emphasizing the critical importance of approaching this work with humility and recognizing our role as one contributor among many in addressing complex systemic challenges and advancing justice. Navigating the complexities of aligning capital with values requires listening deeply, expanding sight lines, acknowledging what we don’t know, and focusing our efforts on building sustainable and innovative solutions.

NEW STUDY RELEASED: A community benefits agreement (CBA) with New Flyer, the largest electric bus manufacturer in North America, is reshaping how public investments benefit communities and challenging the old playbook of how companies do business in the South.

The CBA highlights how a bold coalition of labor, community, and advocacy groups were able to meet a global corporation at the table to negotiate a complex, multistate CBA. The success of the CBA in Alabama in particular highlights the South as the site of a robust worker-led movement where coalitions are organizing in innovative ways. A new case study from the Jay Mehta Community Benefits Resource Center, a program of Jobs to Move America, details how it was done.

Key findings include:
🔑 CBAs offer a replicable framework for equitable economic development that prioritizes equitable training and hiring opportunities.
🔑 CBAs are a way to ensure public spending comes with public accountability. 🔑 CBAs are a tool to reduce past harms and offer community benefits to populations that often lack access to high-paying manufacturing jobs.
🔑 CBAs are mutually beneficial to communities, labor, and developers. This study makes the case that embedding equity and transparency into public-private partnerships is not optional—it’s essential.
