June 9 NATIVE AMERICAN YOUTH CLIMATE LEADERS - We have Sam Schimmel, Youth Leader, Arctic Youth Ambassador/ Arctic Youth Network as our guest speaker.

Sam is St. Lawrence Island Siberian Yupik and Kenaitze Indian from . Sam experienced first hand how impacts . Sam was appointed by the Governor of Alaska to serve on the State of Alaska's Climate Action Leadership Team. He continues to support climate and as a representative for the National Congress of American Indians Climate Action . Sam is an Advisory Board Member for the Center for Native American Youth and is on the Board of Directors for the Arctic Youth Network. Sam was a presenter at the 2020 Arctic Observing Summit. He is on the core planning team for the 2020 Climate Change . As a 2020/2021 Arctic Youth Sam, continues to , , and and communities about Arctic issues. Sam was awarded the 2020 at this year's 2020 Tribal Environmental Leaders Summit. He is in his third year at Stanford University focusing on Earth Systems and Public Policy.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2018 special report on warming of 1.5°C stressed on the need for all actors including state, sub-national, and non-state to strengthen climate action, and highlighted cooperation between actors as a critical mechanism for halving emissions by 2030 in order to meet the 1.5°C goal (IPCC 2018).

There are two main sources of current sea level rise:
(1) Thermal expansion of the ocean due to increasing ocean temperatures.
(2) The melting of land-based ice sheets in Greenland and in Antarctica, and the glaciers in high altitude regions around the world. The latter is presently the dominating contribution to global mean sea level rise.

Climate refugee is a problem that still remains unaddressed in international law, which has the possibility to escalate into a humanitarian crisis, both for the native country and the host country and the host country. Hence, it will be pragmatic on the part of governments worldwide to treat climate refugees as one of the key issues in their national climate change policy and response.

If we are able to make right choices to arrest the increase in greenhouse gas emissions now, the impact of sea level rise can be reduced to an extent and so can the number of climate refugees.
