๐—ก๐—˜๐—ช ๐—™๐—˜๐—”๐—ง๐—จ๐—ฅ๐—˜! Ahead of shipping the work to Los Angeles for her solo show at Nicodim Gallery, All top teeth knocked out at once, June Canedo de Souza invited Laura Owens into her Houston studio. What emerges is a conversation circling the โ€œin-between,โ€ the state where a painting resists resolution, where process remains visible, โ€œwhere the potential is still there, and the viewer has more to chew on in terms of: What are these forms? And how do they emerge from the paint? What are they representing? What is the scale?โ€ โ€” Laura Owens.

The dialogue circles back to questions that only fully emerged in hindsight โ€” how paintings relate to each other, how they change once they leave the studio, and what they carry as they move through different spaces.

โ€œIn their absence, I can see how interconnected they were, how much they belong to each other, and how much their making was shaped by the space where they were made.โ€ โ€” June Canedo de Souza

Images: 2) A featured quote from Laura Owens reflecting on painting as an interconnected whole: โ€œItโ€™s really hard for me to divorce any one painting from the wholeโ€ฆโ€

Images: 3) Installation view of dozens of abstract studies and paintings pinned salon-style to a white wall, accompanied by June Canedo de Souzaโ€™s reflections on using painting to understand the last few years.

Images: 4) A single abstract painting in muted gray, olive, yellow, pink, and brown tones, layered with gestural marks and geometric passages within a wooden frame.

Images: 5) A luminous industrial gallery space with a large-scale abstract painting, exploring themes of process, space, labor, and allowing work to remain unresolved.

The conversation circles the โ€œin-betweenโ€ โ€” the place where a painting resists closure, where traces of making remain visible, and where meaning continues to shift as works leave the studio and enter new spaces.

In this interview, performance artist Karen Finley and curator May Makki discuss performance, pedagogy, and imagination as a form of cultural activism. From the legacy of the NEA Four to the evolving meaning of being an โ€œAmericanโ€ artist, Finley shifts the focus away from personal narrative, reflecting instead on collective support, the role of teaching in shaping creative work, and the urgent sociopolitical realities shaping artistic practice today.

โ€œFamily makes you special.
Family is something you cannot choose. It is made up of different
personalities, different habits, and different ways of thinking. Maybe that is
why it becomes so special . The memories you create together are special.
All the imperfect and illogical parts ,they are things no modern system can
copy. And that is what makes them truly precious.โ€ โ€” Jenny Fax

We are thrilled to announce Victoria Camblin as the sixth Editor-in-Residence at Topical Cream.
Victoria Camblin is the sixth high-profile Editor-in-Residence at Topical Cream, succeeding ย curator Lumi Tan (); Ebony L. Haynes (), Global Head of Curatorial Projects at David Zwirner; MoMA PS1 Chief Curator Ruba Katrib; curator Laura McLean-Ferris (); and curator Nora Khan.

โ€œI am honored to have the opportunity to contribute to Topical Creamโ€™s mission and vision in 2026. I plan to use the editorial residency to engage writers, curators, and artists of all disciplines around the notion of mentorship and alternative forms of education โ€” to explore how new systems evolve when creative communities are not supported by traditional institutions, and to celebrate the educational pathways that emerge through collaboration, intergenerational exchange, and lived experience.โ€ย

โ€”Victoria Camblinย

โ€œItโ€™s very exciting to welcome Victoria Camblin as Topical Creamโ€™s 2026 Editor-in-Residence,โ€ said Lyndsy Welgos, Topical Cream Executive Director. โ€œVictoria brings an unusually wide and incisive perspectiveโ€”ranging from her leadership as editorial and artistic director of ART PAPERS in Atlanta, where she championed artists working across the Deep South, to her role helping to shape one of the most respected international fashion and culture magazines, 032c. We are especially inspired by her deep investment in education and mentorship as a modality of publishing.ย  We canโ€™t wait to hold the final print publication in our hands in October 2026.โ€

โ€”Lyndsy Welgosย

Thank you to everyone who joined Topical Cream at Artists Space last week to celebrate the launch of our full-color print issue with Lumi Tan.

For this issue, she brings together ten essays, reviews, and interviews shaped by the conceptual foundations of performance and time-based art to consider what it means to find comfort in cadence and digression in a time of polycrisis.

This extraordinary two-cover issue features performance artist Karen Finley (NEA Four) in Womenโ€™s History Museum, with the second cover featuring Lumi Tan holding a Topical Cream zine created with our 2024 Editor-in-Residence Ebony L. Haynes.
The full-color magazine marks a major milestone for the organization and includes archival features and programmatic content from across Topical Creamโ€™s ecosystem.
