The Center at West Park

The Center at West Park is a home for arts, culture, and community in the landmark West Park Presbyterian Church on the Upper West Side in Manhattan.

The Center at West Park is a community and arts non-profit dedicated to affordability, accessibility, inclusivity, and diversity, and to stopping the demolition of NY Landmark West Park Presbyterian Church. The Center is a secular not-for-profit organization that offers a diverse range of programs for artists, audiences, and the neighborhood; manages the building’s facilities; and stewards the restoration of its historic exterior. We are building a welcoming and inclusive community that spans diverse points of view; cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds; national origins and immigration statuses; ages, abilities, orientations, and gender identities; and religious and spiritual affiliations (or none at all). We call the diverse members of our community into relationship through our shared commitment to creative and intellectual expression.

“or do it explode?” takes place in the portal that is Spanish Harlem, New York City- right on the intersection of all our timelines. Our characters teeter on the edge of unfulfilled dreams and battle rainstorms of memories as they prepare for their championship stickball game. Absurdism, music, and movement take us through our day as we battle gentrification, grief, and love.

Join us this Thursday 9/24 at 7 PM as the Evolution Festival continues with acolyte training! Tickets are available on our website or at the link in our bio!

acolyte training is an installation for q***r products of Black Southern Christianity. The installation follows 3 Acolytes exploring community through rites of passage. They exist as nothing while transitioning from child to clergy-member, girl to woman. The acolytes explode that “nothing” together, and decide what it means to complete training.

As a community, we often celebrate the highest of highs and agonize over the lowest of lows, but we are the constant. No matter the state of the world, we must continue to fight through the blues of life and be resilient in the face of adversity. House Of Blue is more than just a song: it’s an ethos, a mantra if you will, a note to self to persevere despite the most turbulent of circumstances. It is a reminder that we are the force that quells the rollercoaster of life.

The Magic Lantern Anthology radiates from New York City’s shimmering puppetry underground! With acts originating in the Object Movement Puppetry Residency, made possible by generous support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the Jim Henson Foundation, this anthology brings together some of the most innovative acts in American puppetry.

As part of our CWP 9/11 25th Anniversary Remembrance Events, CWP is partnering with St. Paul & St. Andrew UMC to present a one night only performance of The Guys. A week after the attack, a woman finds herself helping a fire captain write eulogies for his fallen men. Over some cold coffee on a long afternoon, two souls find moments of connection, humor, and compassion in the face of grief. Based on writer Anne Nelson’s own experience, The Guys opened in December 2001 just a few blocks from Ground Zero. It ran for over a year with a rotating cast that included Sigourney, Weaver, Bill Murray, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, and many more.

In commemoration of the 25th anniversary, Anne Nelson and director David Skeist have enlisted actors Kevin Shea, the sole survivor of Ladder Co. 35 on 9/11, and Melissa Wolff, who has performed the play regionally and for numerous firefighter conventions and gatherings, for a staged reading and post-show talk back to reflect on the event and it’s legacy for New Yorkers and the world.

TOMORROW @ 7 pm the CWP Launchpad Reading continues with “I Close My Eyes and Do my Duty” by Defne Ozkan!  Don’t miss this one-night-only play reading! “I Close My Eyes and Do My Duty” is a Turkish play written by Haldun Taner, one of Turkey’s most celebrated playwrights. First performed in 1978, the play satirically delves into the lives and struggles of actors during the early days of the Turkish Republic.

CWP is thrilled to announce that Tashanea Whitlow will be moderating our Women in Sports and Leadership Summit panel! Tashanea is an Emmy-awarded anchor for “Good Day Wake Up” weekdays from 4:30 am to 7 am where you may have previously seen our Executive Director Debby Hirshman. Tashanea is a former national dayside anchor for the Black News Channel (BNC), where the Boston native worked for nearly two years. She has covered events such as: the riots after the death of George Floyd, the Coronavirus pandemic, and its impact on Black and Brown communities. We could not be more excited to have Tashanea joining us and the panelists at this wonderful event that celebrates leadership, resilience, and the power of women in sports!

On this Tuesday, September 8, join us for the Women in Sports & Leadership Summit, bringing together accomplished Olympic athletes, executives, agents, advocates, and community leaders for an evening celebrating the extraordinary impact women continue to have on sports and society.

The summit will open with a networking cocktail reception at 4:15pm, followed by a 45-minute moderated panel conversation at 5:30pm featuring an exceptional group of current and former female athletes and those shaping the sports industry today.

Following the panel at 6:30pm, enjoy the New York premiere of Mighty Mary, directed by award-winning filmmaker and Olympian Mary Mazzio. Mighty Mary is a riveting documentary about the first-ever all-women's sailing crew to compete for the America's Cup — one of the most elite and exclusive events in international sports. Mighty Mary tells the true story of a team of world-class athletes who were widely dismissed as a publicity stunt — and who went on to stun the sailing world by defeating four-time America's Cup champion Dennis Conner, before a controversial backroom decision upended the outcome.

The screening will be followed by a moderated conversation with the film’s director, Mary Mazzio, and other special guests.
