“My 78-Year-Old Boss Took Me to a Park and Said, ‘As of Today, You No Longer Work for Me.’ I Froze, Thinking He Was Firing Me After Years of Loyalty… Then He Offered to Keep Me Only on One Condition. What He Said Made Me Walk Away in Tears.”
I had worked for Mr. Richard Bennett’s company for seven years.
When I first got the job, I was twenty-four, had almost no experience, and was so nervous that my hands shook during the interview.
Richard was already in his seventies then. Everyone in the company was a little afraid of him.
He never yelled. He never insulted people.
But one look over the top of his glasses was enough to make you immediately wonder what you had done wrong.
Over the years, I became his personal assistant.
I knew his meeting schedule, his clients’ names, and even which mornings were not a good time to bring him complicated problems.
And as strange as it may sound, I believed he trusted me.
Until the week everything changed.
On Monday, he called me into his office.
“Emily, do you have plans after four on Friday?”
“No.”
“Then wait for me downstairs.”
“Do we have a meeting?”
He looked up at me.
“No. Just you and me.”
That felt a little strange.
But the next few days made it even stranger.
On Tuesday, I saw the head of accounting carrying my personnel file into Richard’s office.
On Wednesday, Richard called the company lawyer twice.
And on Thursday, when I entered his office, I saw a document on his desk with my full name printed across the top.
He immediately closed the folder.
“Not yet,” he said.
“Not yet what?”
“Tomorrow.”
I barely slept that night. I was convinced I was about to be fired.
The company’s revenue had declined in recent months, several employees had already been let go, and I was the only person in my family with a steady income.
My mother lived with me. My younger brother was still in school. If I lost my job, I had no idea what I would do.
At four o’clock on Friday, Richard came downstairs. He was not even wearing a tie.
“Let’s go.”
“Where?”
“Not far.”
Ten minutes later, we arrived at a small park. We walked to a bench. Richard sat down. I remained standing.
“Sit down, Emily.”
“Mr. Bennett, if you’re going to fire me, please just say it.”
He looked at me silently for a moment.
Then he said,
“Fine. As of today, you no longer work for me.”
My heart dropped. Even though I had expected those words, hearing them was completely different.
“Can I ask why?”
“Because I’ve made my decision.”
“Did I do something wrong?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
He folded his hands.
“I can keep you in the company on only one condition.”
I looked at him immediately. At that moment, my mind went to the worst possible place. His voice was calm. Too calm.
“What condition?”
Richard looked directly into my eyes.
“If you want to stay, starting tomorrow, you will no longer work for me for a salary.”
For several seconds, I did not understand what he meant.
“Excuse me?”
“You heard me.”
“You want me to work for free?”
He did not answer. That silence hurt more than anything. Seven years.
I had stayed at the office late countless times. I had come in even when I was sick.
I had saved meetings, fixed last-minute contract problems, and dealt with difficult clients for him.
And now he was telling me I could stay only if I stopped getting paid?
My eyes filled with tears.
“I thought you were a different kind of man.”
Richard opened his mouth, but I stopped him.
“No. Please. Don’t say anything.”
